miWay Transit

Oakville and Mississauga should work together to expand the Mississauga transitway westward to Trafalgar/ 407 park & ride. This would give Oakville residents easier access to Square One.

Mississauga should also look at expanding the Transitway north alongside the 410 till it reaches the 407. Put a stop at Courtney Park. This extension would be beneficial for GO buses as they wouldn't have to merge onto the 403 inorder to get onto the 407.

Don't just write that here, send an email to the Mayor of Oakville, and cc the Chair of Halton Region with your idea.

According to a notices, all 2300 buses will have white display starting Aug 5 as well the 82 24 00buses that will start to arrive this month until March 2025

It doesn't state what is to happen for the 1000-2200 and expect the same will happen with 700-800 not being done since they are past their retirement date already with the 900 schedule to be retire after all the 2400 are here

The 1000 are due to retire in 2026 with the hybrids hanging around a few more years due to cost to replace them and not all of the blue ones still haven't been paint orange yet.
feels like a bit of a waste to change all the screens

Not when you can see them and read them better than the old ones
To be fair how many routes interline? If you see a bus approaching “your” stop it’s likely the right one 95% of the time.

I’m on my 5th miway bus of the day, and everyone of them has had something broken. AC, stop request signs. And I think the power plugs on the blue former express buses seemed to stop working years ago!

What about CCTT and other terminals as buses arrive or depart or routes where there are more than one route on them. It boils down to customer service and better informing them. One reason why route names were change to get rid of scrolling display as well being more clear where they go.

As for things broken, it happens on other systems as well. Send a list in to customer service of what you found broken along with a bus number if you have one.

If you are standing on a street and wondering where your bus is, the white stands out more than other colours.

I like the new displays on the buses. They're very crisp and clear and make it easy to see what the bus says. A lot of the orange ones either looked like they were dying, or were corrupted / dead in the water on some of MiWay's fleet.

Fresh off the presses, Miway Service changes for September '24:

Plus some Platform changes.

I don't see anything on the extent of the frequency improvements right now, so I'll leave others to delve into that.

Finally went through all of the changes.
  • 5 Dixie:

  • 43 Matheson: retiming, one more trip per direction (no two-way service despite 87 being cancelled)

  • 76 Burnhamthorpe: cancelled (-3 buses AM peak, -4 PM peak, -2 off-peak)
  • 87 Skymark: cancelled (-2 buses peak)
  • 110 University Express: weekday short trips return from around 8 am to 6 pm
    • CCTT-UTM: from 21 to 12 (+3 buses)
    • UTM-Clarkson: from 21 to 24 (runtime increase)
  • 126 Burnhamthorpe Express: new route between UTM and Kipling (+8 buses peak)
    • AM peak: 5:57 to 9:00 EB, 6:55 to 10:02 WB, longest headway 20 min
    • PM peak: 1:56 to 6:27 WB, 1:52 to 6:35 WB, longest headway 29 min
I appreciate the improvements here and there but the way they let less busy routes languish is sad. The 68 is becoming indistinguishable from a typical YRT route. I believe this is the first time since MT's inception that they're running a normal route less than hourly?

The changes to the route 5 are indeed very disappointing. As usual MiWay's service change notices are inconsistent and lacking in detail.

Although an additional bus is added in the PM peak the impact of shortened blocks results in a loss of 14.83 daily vehicle hours (3,737.16 hours annually) for the route 5's weekday service. The combination of shifted resources and longer run times results in a loss of 21 daily weekday trips, 10 southbound and 11 northbound.

Impacts of the changes visualized in the linked attachments:

Vehicle Block Graph - 5 Dixie - Weekdays - 2024

More to come.

The 68 is not exactly a highly used route. My parents live just off Bancroft, and whenever I drive by and see a 68 bus, it's normally almost completely empty. It's good that the option is there, but this route is by no means a top performer.

I was just looking at the 126, and I noticed it skips over Square One entirely and sticks to Burnhamthorpe, which is great because I can just walk over to Burnhamthorpe instead of trekking all the way up to the CCTT.

I will mourn the loss of the #76. It drops me off right in front of work at Robert Speck and CC. I'll have to walk from/to Burnhamthorpe starting next week. I actually do that frequently already, when I use Bike Share at Islington Station...... but.... it will suck on bad weather days. I suppose I could take a bus down to Burnhamthorpe and make the transfer, but that's also unappealing and possibly even more time consuming.

The 126 will be a somewhat nice addition though...but not really replacement for 76.

The 126 doesn't seem to be in Transit (App) yet, even if I show inactive lines.

As a bonus, Triplinx appears to be broken today (on mobile, and laptop). Suuuuuuuper slow, and mostly comes back blank or not at all when trying to search routes.

There is a report on next week's budget committee agenda requesting approval for the hydrogen pilot to proceed:

[Budget Committee] MiWay Transit Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Bus Project Update – September 2024

  • 10 New Flyer XHE40s are being purchased with delivery to occur towards the end of 2025. The buses will operate out of Malton Garage.
  • There will be a $10M city contribution and a further $10M from the Federal Zero Emission Transit Fund. The $10M city contribution is the equivalent of 10 standard buses which was approved by city council back in 2018-2019. Now that additional funding has been secured, the project can proceed.
  • A service provider will be procured to secure hydrogen production, distribution and dispensing to the buses including all equipment. MiWay will not own any of the equipment, rather utilizing the service provider as a "hydrogen as a service" model.
Other reports:

[Budget Committee] Financial Report as at June 30, 2024

[Budget Committee] 2025 Budget Outlook

  • Fare revenue is approximately $10M better than budgeted due to strong ridership growth
  • MiWay proposes to add 120,000 annual service hours in 2025 (8% service growth)
[Transit Committee] MiWay September and October 2024 service changes

  • Continued overcrowding on Derry, McLaughlin and Mavis Corridors
  • Planned extension of 51 Tomken to Bramalea GO, serving on street stop on Steeles and looping through terminal roadway (no stop inside terminal). Change will result in slightly wider headways
  • Improved Sunday service on 61 Mavis (18 min to 15 min midday; 43 min to 23 min evening)
