miWay Transit

MT service changes, September 6:
http://www.mississauga.ca/portal/miway/servicechanges

Highlights
- 32B Eglinton West - canceled
- 102 Intercity Express and 202 Hurontario Express - new stop at Bristol (unfortunately the 10 still services Huntingfield Dr so the connect is still difficult at best)
- 107 Malton Express - 4 new stops
- 110 University - new frequencies - not as good as it was last year, imo

The rest are just minor schedule adjustments of one or two trips. Pretty disappointing, especially compared to what Brampton is getting. Brampton now has better Sunday service. Hopefully, MT will add a lot of service in October when Mi Local and Mi Express are launched officially.

Well do they keep 58 Malton?

That's what we need to improve our transit systems - more ADVERTISING! Unfortunately the TTC can't afford to do this.

That's what we need to improve our transit systems - more ADVERTISING! Unfortunately the TTC can't afford to do this.

Looks like Mississauga got some corporate help. Notice the ads for Cineplex, Playdium, Wonderland and Square One in the ads. Im sure they helped out with some of the costs if not most.

Really don't see how advertising would help the TTC at all ...

Even in the 905 it only really works to promote new services - so for the TTC all they do attempt to do is maybe for new express bus routes that they are creating.

But honestly we're better off if they don't advertise as most of these routes are so much over capacity already during rush.

I think it's needed to much larger degree in the 905 and can be more effective as there's typically less media coverage in general and there's a lot smaller rider base and a much larger car oriented base who probably wouldn't even be aware of these options otherwise - so this will hopefully catch some of this. I don't think the same can be said about the TTC

Yup, with all the overcrowding and closed door situation on many MT routes throughout the whole day everyday, clearly the problem in Mississauga is the lack of demand for transit, and therefore the solution to spend money on advertising and spend less money on bus service. Great job MT.

^ And this is why the TTC doesn't spend more money on advertising--they can see comments like this coming a mile away.

I was wrong, they are adding bus bays along Rathburn after all (east of the terminal). For some reason they are redoing the whole parking lots at the same time and there is at least one stand-along retail structure being built as well, so I got confused. I don't like this, it will cause more delay for buses coming in the east as they will have wait for more pedestrians before being able to enter the terminal.

Does anybody here know the "advertising revenue" of TTC?

According to the TTC's 2010 operating budget (see Exhibit 1), the TTC expected about $14 million in revenue for 2010, and $16 million in 2009. That's compared with income from fares of $888 million in 2010 ($851 million in 2009), so the advertising revenue is just under 2% of the revenue from the farebox.

Final numbers are in: Mississauga Transit had 29.5 million riders in 2009. That's a decrease of over 1.8 million riders and 6 percent compared to 2008. Ouch. In comparison, York Region lost 900k riders in 2009 and Brampton lost around 100k.

Also MT posted some videos of the new buses (which will be put into service starting Oct 4)

I think since they got 22 shiny new blue articulated buses, and there is a shortage of orange articulated buses on both weekdays and weekends, adding service to 101 would make more sense than 102, since Hurontario only uses artics on weekends. It would save them money and relieve overcrowding at the same time. It is surprising MT continues to do nothing...

MiWay launched today. I got a chance to ride the new blue articulate express buses this morning from Meadowvale to Islington. Very nice. I'll upload pictures when I get home. It seems as though the only lights in the bus are the reading lamps. The power outlets are pretty convenient, but in some pretty awkward positions (my power cord kept hitting the person in front of me). The one thing I'm a tad disappointed about is that they didn't add the "Next Stop" feature on these buses, which seems pretty counter productive to me, but oh well. Otherwise I think its a step in the right direction.
