By 'sort of' I meant that the original bronze plaques were remounted on the new monument, while the cross from the top of the old monument is now lying flat in front of it.

It's the end of the year already. Wishing you all health & much happiness in 2016. I have scanned some prints from slides & I would like to share them with you. Scenes from the Canadian National Exhibition (one of my favourite places) & one of Yonge & Queen also from 1960.

(1) The lack of the HHofF and the presence of the Manufacturers' Building (burnt 1961; replaced by the Better Living Centre),

(2) in the Yonge photo, the presence of the brand new 2 Carlton Tower (long familiarly thought of as the "CAA Building"--or the "OML Building" if you're *really* old school)

Interesting how behind the 70s slats, the Moderne "portholes" of the Rio facade were still intact. (Would anything remain behind the present facade panelling? The proportions of the second-floor window seem the same as in 1950)

I always thought there was something odd about 370 College. I also noticed that the building on the corner of Brunswick housing Caplansky's had matching facade details. Then I found a couple of old photos which show that it used to be one united facade. Not sure what happened to it but by the 1920 the center-right portion was replaced by the theatre. Maybe a fire?

yonderbeam, you've made some interesting discoveries regarding the history of that block.
Some old storefronts in Toronto are laced with amazing back-stories, eh?
If we never LOOK UP above the new street-level improvements we can miss some great historical details.

I do remember a c1960 photo that showed a spectacular Moderne-ish corner diner called "Algier" in the Caplansky's location...
