Metrolinx: Other Items (catch all)

While I like that many new transit projects are moving to Metrolinx, the Metrolinx project website is terrible for information. There are no official documents, links to studies, or technical information avaliable. Does anyone know if Metrolinx actually provides this information or do you need to look at board meeting agenda slides and information presenations to city councils?

The Greater Region Metrolinx site, which they seem to use for most of their projects has some documents. Certain projects have more than others.

Transit Alliance will be holding a virtual meeting via zoom with Phil Verster CEO Metrolinx on May 14 at 3 pm focused on COVID-19 preparedness and recovery for Metrolinx. This should be a fascinating discussion with the top transit person in Ontario if not Canada. Transit Alliance is disappointed we can’t have the regular dinner meetings right now as we are all respecting physical distancing but we are excited to have this opportunity to discuss the future of transit in the GTA in our current circumstances. We hope you will join us. Register by submitting your email address. There will be no charge for this event but it is only open to Transit Alliance members.

OUR SPEAKER:
Phil Verster is the President & Chief Executive Officer at Metrolinx.

Phil oversees a team committed to transforming transportation in the GTHA. With a strong community and customer service emphasis, Metrolinx is delivering quality transportation services on time and on budget, and working collaboratively with our partners – all key elements to delivering on the promise of Metrolinx’s Regional Transportation Plan.

Prior to joining Metrolinx, Phil was one of the UK’s rail leaders, having managed train operations, infrastructure builds and infrastructure management for passenger rail systems in England, Scotland and Ireland. An engineer by training, Phil began his career in the electricity sector in his native South Africa. From 2001 to 2003, he was Depot Manager and Production Director for a UK division of Bombardier Rail. In 2003, Phil moved from the supplier side to passenger rail operations at Southeastern Trains. He then spent five years at Irish Rail, where he served in different roles, including Deputy CEO. In 2011, Phil joined Britain’s Network Rail. His first assignment was Managing Director London North East and East Midlands Route , the second largest route in the Network Rail system. He pioneered a new approach to structured continuous improvement that delivered improved safety and train performance as well as an enhanced passenger experience. Phil put the same innovation and discipline to work in his subsequent assignment for Network Rail running Scotland’s ScotRail passenger rail service, from 2015 to 2017. In early 2017, Phil served as Managing Director of Network Rail’s East West Railway.
Phil has a Bachelors of Engineering and a Masters of Engineering, both from the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. He has an MBA from the University of Newcastle Business School and an LLM Post Graduate Diploma (Commercial Law) from the University of Northumbria, both in the UK.

Looking at the site on Monday, close to 2 dozen parking spaces for the site will be lost for that 2nd platform.

Not sure what interference is going to disrupt the line as ties are being install now for the 2nd track and the locomotive is south of those ties. The line will not be in service for GO by then. Other than a bypass for a short freight train, no real interference other than lifting the locomotive onto a trailer over a weekend.

So the one tidbit I picked out of this is that Phil Verster thinks the public won't accept standing room only transit for the forseeable future (at least not close face-face crowding.

He also says they (Metrolinx) have worked out a plan to allow for ridership to return, but without that level of crowding.

He would not specify how.

Comments on this start at about 5:40 and last about 25s.

I'd be fascinated to hear how one does this without substantially increasing service (assuming 80% ridership recovery by fall.)

Does go have the spare rolling stock or operators to meaningfully boost rush-hour services?

I would expect a 25% increase in service would be needed, on the low end.

Hmmm.

What's new exactly? It's all been posted there for years
There are new webpages for infrastructure projects and station upgrades related to RER. Here's some examples:

http://www.metrolinx.com/en/greaterregion/projects/steeles-grade-separation.aspx
http://www.metrolinx.com/en/greaterregion/projects/mimico-go.aspx

Updated maps with the color tone changed.

Kirby is still alive, identified on the map as a future station .

Mind me asking but what's the problem with that? Also, notice Lawerence East and Gerrard stations are no longer on the map.
It's easily the most useless proposal in the GO Network, and a legacy of Stephen Del Duca's idiotic self-fulfilling prophecy of having a station in his own riding as a bid to keeping his seat.

^With its new policy of development oriented station planning, the only way ML will support a new station is if a developer expresses interest. I take the inclusion of Kirby as a sign that some company is in fact planning development up that way.

Sigh, how much money has ML wasted on decorating their website over and over?

Funding for any signal priority on Eglinton. I'll admit I actually like the feel of their website. It's sort of pleasant to look at even with its typos.
