Metrolinx: Bombardier Flexity Freedom & Alstom Citadis Spirit LRVs

Perhaps post-Trump, the San Diego Trolley could be extended further into Tijuana. Right now, it stops just at the border.

Rapid transit with frequent stops crossing a border generally doesn't work well due to the customs requirement. If you get a single customer who requires extended evaluation it slows down the entire trip for everybody.

However, Hong Kong/Shenzhen style setup where you get out of the train, walk through customs, then board a new train seems to work perfectly fine (as does pre-clearance express service). Each agency can provide rapid service to the border and border staff can handle each case as required without slowing down any other individuals waiting to reboard the vehicle. Drivers do not need to be cleared on every single trip or carry a passport; nor do vehicles need searched to prevent smuggling. The Windsor/Detroit bus gets a thorough search some trips; really slows things down.

SITT has a pretty reasonable BRT service on the south side of the border heading into Old Tijuana. The walk between the 2 services isn't any longer than at a large airport and IIRC fares are under $1.

San Diego has a "South Bay BRT" heading to another border crossing under construction. The real question is will Tiajuana International Airport run a shuttle service to it so you can take fly in that way (much lower fares for anybody South/Central America) then cross over to downtown San Diego.

there is already a terminal entrance to the Tijuana Airport on the US side of the border, with a bridge over the border into the main terminal building. No need for a shuttle. IIRC it is the only airport in the world to be located in 2 countries.

It's been a decade or so since I was last in SD, but crossing the border going south was virtually an open door other than it being watched for certain individuals that even the Mexicans considered non-grata. It's coming north that's the fine tooth comb. There's all sorts of reasons for looping the Trolley on the north side of the border this century.

There is but that doesn't connect with either the BRT under construction or the existing LRT. It's a great private vehicle pickup/dropoff point though.

Man that looks like a dream. Love seeing these modern bits of elevated lines with lots trees in the background.

Somewhat related, but for the arced/rounded fronts of vehicles like Freedom or Citadis Spirit, are they aesthetic or functional? As in, do they serve a purpose like aerodynamics or deflecting pedestrians, or more for looking sharp. Personally grown to like flat fronts, a la typical subway cars, which I think also work well when forming a train (e.g uses space slightly more optimally).

Out of those two, I would prefer the first. The second system seems like it would increase dwell times at stations as cyclists lock and unlock their bikes.

the problem is there may not be anywhere to put them unless they want to take out seats somewhere and that probably won't go over too well. The current ones on the streetcar are ill-used and badly thought out as well too
