Just six garden suites have been built in the city since the start of 2022. The smaller units on properties were supposed to help address the housing crisis and provide some of the 'missing middle' needed. Mark McAllister reports.

I think garden suites would be sweet in the outer suburbs where the backyards are large enough to accommodate another 1-2 dwellings on the property. Are any communities outside of Toronto proper considering these?

Yes! Almost all of the bigger places with emphasis on Hamilton, Kitchener and Brantford.

Guess I should post my own project. I'm building a laneway house in my backyard here in Hamilton. I demolished an existing garage (not in good enough shape for conversion) and I'm building a 1.5 storey house. Same footprint, a bit taller. I have a private laneway off to an adjacent street on one side. I started the process in December 2022. Permits issued in October and excavation began in December of last year. Ask me any questions!
