GTHA Transit Fare Integration


As I said it would, some months back:


Unfortunate that none of the enhancements they were looking at are moving forward at this point, that means they will likely be deferred to at least 2027.

But not surprising as the enhancements they were looking at would have driven ridership, much higher, particularly on GO.

I'm not sure what you're asking.

The existing program did result in a fare rebate if you use both the TTC and GO, but renewing it doesn't change anything.

There were several different augmentations under discussion, none of which are going forward right now.

I can't see much else that would cost money or provide benefit, other than expanding the base fare ($3.70 with Presto) to encompass more (if not all) of the city.

Presumably to significantly boost GO ridership, effective GO fares would have been substantially reduced.
 
I don't get why the extension is for two more years and not permanent. When it was first introduced for two years, I thought it was a due diligence policy where there would be a report after two years which would recommend making the program permanent as a next step.
 
I would like to see more one seat rides on cross border routes between Toronto and surrounding regions. Seamless travel, similar to the routes TTC had prior to TYSSE. Even if they last two years, they appear to really attract customers.

Some progress on Miway taking over some TTC routes in the west. And TTC taking over some routes from YRT crossing Steeles to the north. I'm sure you can still have the same operating funding model agreement between TTC and other transit agencies.

It could be permanent if it’s proven popular and increasing ridership on routes between cities.

They've had two years to prove this (which is what I expect an official report to do). I suppose it could be to match the gas tax cut, which (IIRC) was extended once before being made permanent. Now they can claim to treat drivers and non-drivers equally..
 
The 2026 Budget had an interesting tidbit teasing further fare integration coming this/next year.

"The government is taking further action to make public transit easier and more affordable across municipalities in the GTHA. It is moving forward with legislation, followed by engagement with partners, to explore expanding free transfers, simplifying fares, improving cross-boundary travel, and enhancing specialized transit."
 
The One-Fare program has been a great success and was long overdue but in order for GO to reach it's full potential and become a viable option for all Torontonians and not just considered a commuter route, they should make the system the same fare AND completely transfer free.

Within the City {or any other city on the system for that matter}, the fares for GO should be the same as local transit and not just a discount. The price to travel within the city should be the same regardless of the type of service or vehicle you take just like it already is with subways/streetcars/buses. Only the transit rider knows which route is best for them and they shouldn't have to pick the best one dependent upon which one they can afford.

Such a system would also bring uniformity to fares. Right now everyone knows how much it costs to go from Weston to Kennedy taking the TTC but no one off the top of their head knows how much it would cost if they wanted GO to be part of that trip.
