GTHA Transit Fare Integration

As mentioned in the upcoming metrolnx board meeting for June 26th, the one fare program has been an overwhelming success: https://www.metrolinx.com/en/about-us/the-board/board-meetings/meeting-2025-06-26

In respect of the Mx Annual Report, the key paragraph on Fare Integration is thus:

I am given to understand that material fare reforms/reductions are being examined with an eye to spring '26 implementation. *

As always dates are subject to change, and with the world's most opaque organization since MI6 .....you may never know what the change was/is until after its happened. LOL

could this mean the one fare program is ending or being extended beyond march 2026?

One Fare will be extended.

What is being discussed is further enhancement with a few points of focus, simplifying and lowering the cost of GO Fares, and harmonizing fare models across the various GTA systems.

The exact offer is yet to be determined, and the start date is tentative.

So how do you like the idea of Metrolinx fare vending machines at major city intersections?

Not sure how much of a gain is there to be had - especially considering the viability of alternate payments. I wonder if this is more about capturing customer info and selling it.

Weren't such machines required as part of the TTC-Presto agreement ... perhaps so long ago that they were less redundant.

Though I hear enough Presto Card failures when tapping, that having some spots to top up the card outside of the subway system doesn't seem unreasonable. It's not like my 13-year old is wandering around with a debit/credit card.

^ I'd argue that this is no different from an ATM... hopefully they were smart enough to install mirrors to watch your six (behind).

As usual, Toronto is a bit lagging at times.

We have ATMs, Finland has ripped them out, and consolidated bank branches into one central location in a city. You can't even call without paying a Euro or two a minute.

We're just installing TVMs now, while Helsinki is ripping them out, in favour of online loading. If you want to do it in person - they'll surcharge you ~ a Euro at R-Kiosk.

Ps. Helsinki has the same Conduent readers as Montréal.

Finland has gone cashless - not defending it.

Edit: Our postal service is privatized (PostNord) delivering thrice weekly on Mon/Wed/Fri. For packages you have to go to the closest town where your parcel will be ready in a QR-activated locker.

Not to derail, but this is the GTHA Fare Integration thread. What happened to the plans for MiWay to replace routes 49 and 50, and YRT to take over route 105 inside Toronto?

I thought that was happening.
