GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Tell me the alignment of those panels is an optical illusion!

It looks like the result of Drunk Jenga...........

I’d rather that than the bridge there before it. The floor panels were buckling a week before it closed:

You could also take some of the bolts out of the bridge with your hand:

The agreement-in-principle will add 40 km of track and includes track re-alignments, signal upgrades, bridge work and platform expansions along with Kitchener Line.

Fun fact: The distance from Bramalea to Silver Jct west of Georgetown is 21 kms. So (at face value, assuming that's where the 40 km of track is planned) adding 40 kms of track is effectively giving GO a dedicated double track line thru CN territory.

And there’s space to add another track on the bridge across the Credit River.

assuming all that track is in the CN corridor and not across the entire line..

And there’s space to add another track on the bridge across the Credit River.
Here's my shot at tallying, based on what I can see:
  • Another track on the Weston Corridor between Bramalea and the future Woodbine station, 3 for GO/VIA and 1 for CN switching (5.5 km)
  • Extending said third track along the Halton sub into Bramalea GO (2 km)
  • Adding a second track from the upper Bramalea Jct, along the approach westwards into Bramalea GO (0.5 km)
  • Adding a third track through Brampton GO (1.7 km)
  • Triple tracking from Mt Pleasant to the west end of Georgetown GO (7.6 km)
That leaves about 25 km more track that I can't guess. Some may be GO trackage and a bunch may be switching and spurs. Maybe it's also counting the rebuild of some existing track.

I doubt they'd need an agreement with CN for track over the non-CN sections.

True, but they might need CN’s agreement to change the junction at Halwest.

As usual, we have to assume that the copy writer who does the press release may be mangling the details, and CTV as media reporting doing likewise. So somebody says there will be 40 km of new track - somewhere - but that’s as specific as we can get just yet.

Wouldn’t surprise me if that counts the Strachan-Weston fourth track that we are eagerly awaiting also. And maybe Guelph-Hanlon- Shantz

It's effectively 1 or 2 new tracks from Georgetown to the 407. Including rail to rail flyovers and additional bridge work. The entire corridor will basically be quad track.

It's well into design with some sections nearing completion.

CN did announce - in Nov 2024? - that they were releasing a design work package for the Halton subdivision to accommodate GO Rail. Then that's the last we heard. Are you referring to the deliverables from that work?

This was included in Rob Cerjanec email to people who signed his petition for LSE Express trains.

Response from Metrolinx’s CEO to My Letter

Earlier this week, I received a response from the CEO of Metrolinx. While the response provided slightly more information, many important questions remain unanswered.

They informed me that work on the Birchmount Bridge replacement project at Danforth Ave means that the existing third track will have to be taken out of service. It is disappointing that this work did not start sooner and part of the reason why I am pressing for clear and transparent timelines.

The CEO did not provide more details on the remaining work and timelines for the East Harbour Transit Hub and Ontario Line work that is preventing express service to return. We deserve clarity. The lack of transparency from Metrolinx continues to erode public confidence.

Can someone remind me why we are using unique rolling stock for the Ontario line? Where the original tunnels dug under Queen not big enough for LRT cars?

Why would you use low-floor cars on a brand-new 100% grade-separated subway line?

The new subway is much subway is much deeper than the 1940s roughed-in platform.

That was true when GO was talking about that project as well in the pre-Relief-Line days.
