GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

What did this poor little word ever do to get shunned? It has a meaning, just apply it correctly.

BTW language often has multiple words that mean the same thing. There is no requirement for parsimony in language. Diversity is good. And, it gives words a rest when you choose a synonym instead of using (sic) the same word over and over.

PS - UT without digressions will never happen.

UT topic digressions ftw! But it's an awful word.

^ It was posted in this FB group. Someone else involved in the project says they haven't heard anything.

^There are so many possible qualifications to this that without a clear source, it’s meaningless.
Stop work on X, stop discretionary work, stop contractor spend, hold all contract awards, etc etc. They all mean different things.
This could be a government wide freeze on something, or it could be ML related.
With a ‘line by line’ review of all provincial spending promised, RER and all ML work will be impacted, sure.
Let’s not declare the sky is falling until we have data.

Took a walk out to Guelph Junction today and finally saw some major work going on:

In today's Guelph Mercury-Tribune:

https://www.guelphmercury.com/news-...t-work-on-guelph-rail-crossing-starts-friday/

I was through that ex-intersection (Silvercreek railway crossing. "Hanlon" sign sits right on top of where Silvercreek used to cross, an underpass planned, but signals and hut right on ground zero for that) just a week ago, and noticed the track sections pre-assembled with very heavy rail and much lower tangential turnouts. The road bed is going to need some levelling too, as the sidings now sit about a foot or so lower than the mainline.

Apologies for poor pic quality, it's an inexpensive cell phone I carry as I have a habit losing good quality stuff cycling long distance. I was taken aback at how the pre-assembly was done by a private company. Waybills were still attached to some assemblies.

Switches are being replaced with a lower tangential factor (higher speed rating).

^I’m told by a reliable source that there is no intention to install a siding at Guelph at this time, but that #20 switch can only be in anticipation of higher speeds on a diverging path.
I’m also told reliably that (subject to review of funding) ML has other projects planned for the fall that will address speed restrictions and zone speed limits on the Guelph Sub.
Part of the problem is that GEXR has done so little maintenance on the line that GO has to address what needs fixing most rather than making incremental improvements where they might improve things.
Of particular concern are the large bridges at Breslau and Eramosa, which will reach end of life quite soon.

The proof is in the pic:
- : Pic by @Garuda

That may be not for Metrolinx, though they own the RoW, and "Metrolinx" was marked on all the prefabbed assemblies I saw (and I included a photo of it) but this siding and the one on the north side have always been used for freight, where cars off of the industrial spurs to the north, and the Cambridge spur to the south, are set-off by the local GEXR (or were) service, twice a week if IIRC. I used to live for five years just the other side (east) of Alma Street in the distance, the site of Guelph's first railway station and where the GWR and GTR (Guelph-Toronto railway extension) crossed..

It is clearly visible as to the raising of the track bed of the siding to closer match that of the mainline. This pic was taken almost two weeks after mine, and also shows extending the gravel bed westwards, interesting, as most of the bridges west of there to beyond City Limits are double track width.

Perhaps there's some confusion with re-establishing the now lifted siding from just west of Guelph Central to the Cambridge spur? The siding is still there through Guelph Central Station, but a switch was installed a few years back to connect to the mainline at Dublin Street. The rest west of that was unceremoniously torn up. In all fairness, it probably wasn't up to regulations for passenger use other than shunting empty trains.

Guelph Track Improvements: Imperial Road to Edinburgh Road

Metrolinx has begun a multi-year construction program to expand and improve service on GO Transit’s Kitchener line. Improving GO service means upgrading existing infrastructure to increase speeds and ensure the safety of trains travelling through the Guelph Subdivision. The first phase of work, which started in April, is still underway. You have probably noticed that we are clearing vegetation from the corridor and installing and upgrading fencing.

What an irresponsible and idiotic move in the last pic!!!
Very common for this area from what I have heard. Been there only a few times, each time I saw fools do this on both sides and once being done on both sides at the same time. I posted a video showing another fool doing this some weeks ago.

Seen it happen elsewhere as well and not only in Toronto.
