Former President Donald Trump's United States of America

Sadly, I think he could still get elected. His supporters are conditioned to think the courts are biased. Let's hope he gets jail time.
I would suspect any sentence, if and when it arrives after the inevitable appeals, will be comparatively inconsequential and, for some, disappointing. At the end of the day, he is a first-time offender, it is a non-violent crime and the dollar value is not particularly significant.

Another complication factor is, unless they change the legislation, the US Secret Service would have to be somehow embedded into the state prison (unless he specifically declines protection - which he wouldn't, just cuz).

This won't impact his base, or those committed Democrats. It might move the middle third of voters; moreso if there are further convictions between now and November.

Fingers are crossed that the " court of public opinion " is moving against this felon. However, it's a weird time when the so-called guilty are not viewed by many as really guilty. Trump deserves a lot of credit for this predicament.

Assuming US courts are similar to ours, they are bound by sentencing guidelines. This is an effort to eliminate the 'torch and pitchfork' crowd and treat all accused fairly depending on the evidence and not the person.

If he doesn't Trump is in a pickle, because his three other criminal trials will go to a verdict in 2025, and if convicted in any of those, as a now repeat felon his sentence can be very serious. And if he loses in Nov 2024 his supporters may well fade away in frustration, especially if the GOP looses both the Senate and House, plus multiple pro-choice ballot initiatives pass. Beyond the most ardent MAGA, Trump will be seen as a disaster for the GOP.

If only Fani Willis hadn't shopped for booty in the Fulton County DA staff room, we might have had a second conviction before Nov 2024. Men and women of the prosecution, please keep your pants on and your eye on the target.

Trump will get himself lawyers experts in white-collar crimes, like Oberheiden P.C., and will appeal every decision. There's a high chance that he won't sit in jail for even a day.

Maybe instead of reassuring their students and giving them false comfort, they should letting them sit in the reality that half the country hates them. Maybe they'll do more to protect their freedoms next time.

The article talks about their parents and grandparents being deported. Any child born in the US is a US citizen.
Well, if my parents were criminally overstaying their time in Canada I'd be worried for them too, but I'd also be pissed off, likely telling my folks to get their sh#t together. I would expect the same of my own Canadian-born children had I, after I came to Canada in the 1970's let my legal status lapse and then simply ignored this - my adult kids would be saying Dad, get your immigration status sorted out.

Mind you, I'm from an era when America and Canada's immigrants came, for the most part, from economically depressed, but functionally democratic or otherwise safe countries. If you came to the USA in the 1970s from Italy, for example and overstayed your visitor visa, you could just go back to Italy, apply for a family reunification visa through your US-born kids, and wait it out. The challenge today is that we're not in the era of immigration, but of migration. People are not coming to the USA or Canada because they've done their research, applied at the US/Canada embassy and want to start a new life here. No, their own countries have gone to sh#t and they're running from economic or physical harm towards whatever sanctuary they can reach. These are migrants, not immigrants.

The era of immigration is mostly over, while the migration issue is only going to get worse. Trump will finish his wall and begin deportations, and Poilievre will enact travel Visa restrictions across a whole swarth of Asia and African countries. We're pulling up the drawbridges and lowering the portcullis.
