East Don Trail Project

Work continues at the rail tunnel location. A bunch of site prep, and this beam was placed on interlocking blocks.

Finally some promising signs of tunnelling work! Heard someone on Strava mention they were targeting end of May to do the necessary track closure? Will watch this space as I will certainly want to do a site check when the tunnel gets put in.

The bridge pieces have been moved to the tunnel site!

The East Don Trail site hosted by the TRCA says that "The tunnel-associated works are continuing to progress, with track closure dates secured for Spring 2025 to facilitate the installation of the tunnel."

They don't update their news too often — this is from November, and is the latest.

Phase 1 of the trail has some beautiful growth just south of the overhead bridge below Bermondsey.

Some more work was done at the tunnel construction site. It looks like pipelines were transferred onto the steel beams.

And some additional metal is stored at the site:

Not much new to report on the East Don Trail when I went by this morning, but I did notice the trail switchback access from Eglinton to the West Don Trail is now open. Hope it's not too much longer for that darned tunnel to get completed.

I tried adding the current trail to Google streetview, and it failed because Google thought that the bridge ramp over the Richmond Hill line was inside a building! That's how overbuilt that thing is, Google's AI moderation thought the camera was indoors. Haha

Gave me a good chuckle.

If anyone is curious, I will redo the streetview of the trail once it is fully complete. Just thought it would be nice for people to see the progress and get interest on the trail.

Also a neat thing is that once my streetviews seem to get a certain amount of views, Google goes and does the trail themselves with their much better cameras.

ML might actually be ready to do this!!!
This crane is not cheap. Getting it to the site must have been slow and expensive. The GO train in the picture went through super-slow, with its bell ringing, as if workers were present. The site also had a lot of lighting equipment that would be unnecessary for daylight work. My best guess is that the tunnel rings are going in this weekend.

How long has thing thing been under construction? It's the Crosstown line of trails at this point. Looking forward to finally riding it.

On the topic of other bridges, it looks like some equipment and materials are placed around this bridge to finally raise the level of the approaches. I believe this bridge is "bridge 2" on the TRCA schematic. (As an aside, this schematic makes me worried about Phase 3, which contemplates a lot of bridges and tunnels, including three Metrolinx crossings - sure hope work has been progressing on Phase 3 during the delays on Phase 2!)
