Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

Ellesmere Complete Street is back for another round of consultation, ahead of 2026 proposed construction.

Here's the survey link:

There are materials and renders within the survey allowing informed contribution.

I've seen photos of the redone Lower Don Trail that looks like this:

View attachment 617561

It the fencing on the river side temporary? It looks like https://ramudden.ca/urban-barrier-rental.html which seems to be a rental.

Does anyone know if it will get replace with something more permanent looking and attractive before the trail reopens?
Looks great!!

My only wish, is that we would adopt a bit of a wider MUP standard and do the whole "bikes on this side/pedestrians on this side" thing that they do elsewhere in the world.

Of course, lots of people ignore the markings.

Update was pushed out about the East Don Trail.

Looks like the section from Bermondsey down to the East Don Trail tunnel under the Bala Sub train line is paved (sans top coat finish)

Still waiting on that rail tunnel, and the Medoway section from Bermondsey to Eglinton, both of which are being held up by Metrolinx. Noticing a trend here....

Phase 1 Construction Update: Fall 2024

November 28, 2024

Asphalt paving from Bermondsey Road to Pedestrian-Cycle Overpass Bridge

The work in the section of trail from Bermondsey Road to the finished portion of the East Approach structure started in November 2024.

The work includes grading, grounding system under Hydro One lines, resting nodes, fencing, and final paving, which is anticipated to be completed before the end of the year.

The top layer of the paving will be completed in early spring 2025.

The tunnel-associated works are continuing to progress, with track closure dates secured for Spring 2025 to facilitate the installation of the tunnel.

In preparation for the tunnel installation, preliminary work is required for the relocation and temporary support of existing utilities (i.e hydro, communications, etc.) along the section of rail line at the proposed tunnel location.

CN issued a request for proposal for Bala Sub Mile 7.3 Fiber Relocation in October 2024 and awarded the contract November 2024. They are anticipating submitting the work plan methodology and permit soon to Aecom/Metrolinx and starting the work by early 2025.

The Project Team is diligently monitoring the progress and will be working with Metrolinx to secure additional track closure dates, if required.

It should be noted that once the tunnel is installed there will be additional work, including the north and south boardwalk installation for Bridge 1, with final restoration and paving to complete this section leading to the tunnel.

Members of the public are reminded to adhere to restricted areas for their own safety throughout the duration of construction.

LOL, I hope no one is just picking up on this issue now. Mx has been a thorn in the side of this project from the beginning.......they've literally caused years of delays.

So my understanding is that there is going to be a new bike and pedestrian crossing across the Eglinton LRT at the end to this trail? Any idea how this will be set up? As much as I love cycling infrastructure I hope this does not further slow down the LRT there. I am sure with proper timing for the signals and transit priority this can be mitigated, but I don't trust the TTC and Metrolinx to do this.

I understand this isn't heavy rail, and I am not making a fair comparison, but Metrolinx is building a massive bridge and a tunnel for this trail crossing the Richmond Hill GO line, which sees 10 trains a day, maybe they could have built a tunnel here to not disturb the LRT which will see as many trains in less than half an hour 🤣

Excellent point really, they think that cyclists/hikers/joggers in the valley can't be trusted to obey a traditional railway crossing signal or a conventional traffic light in the alternative.........but they're sure those same people on Eglinton can manage a traffic light just fine.........odd, eh?

They can time the pedestrian/bike crossing to be in-sync with the two nearest intersections so that the bike crossing turns green when the intersections nearest it turn green opposing Eglinton as well. This is what they do at the Beltline crossings. That way the LRT only stops once, provided they time it so that it can make it through the next intersection before stopping again etc.

I've mentioned this before - but a new signalized crossing would increase LRT cycle time above the maximum contractual requirement and CrossLinx would be financially penalized. This is made worse by the grade on this segment of road. The Project Agreement would need to be re-opened to allow for this new crossing, if it is to be at-grade, which it seems like no one is interested in doing. Drawback of P3s..

The crossing here is already approved and funded.

It was supposed to have been done this year, but the City as I understand it, is waiting for Mx to sign off on the Crosstown as a whole.

Considering this, its crazy what they did to the LRT track at this section, with those huge barriers. Almost seems out of spite for the proceeding work.

I'll follow up to see if there's been any change.

They must have sorted out the issue then, at least what I mentioned was the case several years back
