Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

Veering slightly off-topic, but is Operations the department that (mis)manages transit signal priority? đź‘€

No.

Operations is this:

Although I don't live in Toronto, just seeing the improvements the city has made to improve bike lanes over the years is very heartening. Montreal used to be miles ahead of us, and they probably still are in terms of coverage, but I used to be so amazed by the kind of bike lanes they were doing there, so it's great we don't have to be *quite* as jealous as before.

And of course, Mississauga could definitely learn something from Toronto's progress.

Peoples comments are now showing up on the Dupont survey. Will be interesting to see what others have posted (I've only had a quick peek so far).

A couple of photos from this afternoon:

And a view of the track. Curiously, the right side is painted as a pedestrian lane. I'm not sure why, as that's a nice wide sidewalk right beside it!

Sooo, quietly, back in March, the City released new renders for the Overlea bridge overhaul.

Others may recall, that while I was very supportive of the project, I absolutely loathed the suicide barrier design which I felt made being a pedestrian on the bridge feel like being in jail.

Well...........they fixed that.

Herewith, your renders:

I love the upgrades to Leaside bridge so far, but the west side northbound bike lane ends abruptly, leaving one to take the sidewalk or cross the street before the intersection to continue north. I understand metrolinx is to install bike tracks at the Millwood/Overlea intersection when the road work is done so I sent them an email and got the following:

The roadwork on Overlea Boulevard is in phases and I can only confirm the timeline for the current phase. At the moment, the current phase of work on Overlea by Metrolinx is expected to end in December and is focused on relocating utilities, installing temporary traffic signals and streetlight upgrades.

Not too helpful for the near future, so it would be nice if there was a temporary extension to Overlea Blvd on the west side until then

It's definitely a work in progress. The west side track is also signed as "Bike lane closed" at the north end. I'm not quite sure what they are waiting for. Mind you, it's not currently possible to safely cross (by foot or bike) to go on Donlands at the south end of the bridge

Very Viaductian!

I generally dislike these visually intrusive suicide barriers, but I'd probably feel differently if I lost someone that way – or witnessed it.

I am curious what the old renders looked like.

Never mind: I found them. yikes. Big improvement.

To me the thinking here goes: "Well, we don't want to give the cyclists too much room, they might treat it as a bidirectional. So let's hive off 50% for a non-functional, inaccessible, narrow pseudo sidewalk with no protection or separation from much faster moving cyclists!"

I really hope that wasn't the thinking, but this is super weird.
