2014 Municipal Election: Toronto Mayoral Race

How about having voting day on different days for different municipalities. That way they can share the voting machines. Toronto gets Wednesday, Peel gets Tuesday, Halton Thursday, Durham the week after Wednesday.

It is not like a Federal or Provincial election that must be on the same day for everyone.

It's interesting how many card-carrying Liberals on Twitter are supporting Soknacki. In many ways it makes sense. Many dyed in the wool Grits would be uncomfortable backing Tory and Chow who have close ties to the PCs and NDP, respectively. Of course, there are exceptions. George Smitherman is campaigning for Chow and Brad Duguid for Tory.

I did not realize you use Electronic Voting Machines in Toronto. Scary that.
So, there are no actual paper ballots to count if the vote is close? This is how bush was selected, by the 'man in the middle' in 2004. I thought we, in Canada, had heard enough about the mess with electronic voting in the US to avoid it but I guess not. Fortunately the Ford gang are not computer savvy (hopefully) so they probably wouldn't have manipulated the machines.

Oh! Interesting...could a current Toronto voter respond as to whether there is a paper ballot completed or if the vote is straight onto a screen, in your voting machines?

We use 'electronic voting machines' here (Michigan) but a paper ballot is still marked - it's then fed into the machines for counting. So there is still an available manual process, should a recheck be needed. The process can be used for ranked voting also - have seen (paper) ballots from Australia, where a ranked voting system applies.

I assumed (oops!) that this was what was meant by 'electronic voting machines' in Toronto also. Like marking a computerized 'multiple choice' test and having it read and recorded by a machine. Is that the case? Or do you use a touch-screen for the voting itself? Yes, I could see problems with that...

I'm pretty sure I voted using a paper Scantron sheet that was fed in to an electronic reader last time around - felt like I was back in university completing an exam. :p

The optical scanners were tampered with in the 2004 US election also. Apparently it's easily done. Seriously why the need. We can have the count in two hours in the Federal election so what's the rush with municipal results.

I wrote to every MP when Elections Canada was thinking of going with voting machines and the only one I got a response from was Elizabeth May. (Green Party)
No worries , be happy , everything is alright, we trust the programers in all things political... blah blah blah

So apparently Karen Stintz's campaign hasn't hacked off enough people yet, and has done an email blitz, including myself. Given how I have never signed up for anything remotely connected with her, I begin to wonder how/why her campaign is doing it.
