As much as I hate the Gardiner, on those rare occasions when traffic is actually flowing well, it's very useful. Today I got on at Spadina and got off at Hurontario...in 12 minutes flat. Beautiful.

Hell, toll it like the 407 so that it's free flow at all hours for all I care. But keep it.

Yup looks like the province will be maintaining the highway now. Deal comes with transit funding with new train cars and Chow ceding opposition to Ontario Place

I’m not sure the the Province has agreed to take over the rebuild or only ongoing maintenance. Does somebody here know for sure?

From the official document, the Province will be taking complete ownership of it once the audit is complete and has agreed to pay O&M for 2024 and 2025.

Hopefully this deal included continuing with the Gardiner redesign to make lands available for Waterfront Toronto along the north side of Keating Channel.

there aren't really "Standards" for 400-series highways, per-se. The 400 still has an at-grade intersection on it, and there are tons of sub-standard interchanges, tight curves, reduced speed limits on 400-series highways.

To be fair, that intersection is RIRO and I think it's planned to be removed.

Perhaps the naming will stay but I can see Hwy 2 being revived for at least the Gardiner. The QEW designation might also just go right back to where it was pre- downloading at the Humber. The DVP is too different in quality from the 404 that I can see it being applied there, but perhaps if the province shells out some money to widen some curves, expand some shoulders, and upgrade interchanges then it could happen.

I don't think the difference in standards needs to stop the 404 numbering from being extended. There are other 400-series that have similar substandard sections, especially through valleys. The 403 in Hamilton and 406 in St. Catharines for example.

True but the amount of subways we have is about to start going up in big chunks starting in 2024. Also our extensive streetcar system is not often counted despite carrying more passengers per day than many NA cities subway lines! Lol

The streetcar system shouldn't be counted. The upgraded GO lines will have more in common with subways than mixed traffic streetcars do.

Look no further than the 427. Plenty of weaving and RIRO ramps on the collectors. It's quite difficult to navigate for unfamiliar drivers.
