Less than a week since we last checked in on Plaza's Ivory on Adelaide, the project hit a major milestone this Saturday, with the removal of its tower crane. The 22-storey Hariri Pontarini Architects-designed condominium tower rises from 7 and 10-storey podiums on Adelaide just east of Sherbourne. The northern lanes of Adelaide Street were closed off to traffic to make space for a massive portable crane, tasked with the delicate operation of removing sections of the tower crane one by one.
When close enough to ground level, the removal of a tower crane involves the assembly of a temporary crane. In the image above, we can see the boom and jib of the temporary crane in place and ready to proceed with the removal.
In the image above, the tower crane's boom is down, and the jib is being disassembled and lowered piece by piece onto awaiting flatbed trucks below. Below, the temporary crane can be seen in the foreground, while only one section of crane still remains atop the tower.
Additional Ivory information and plenty of renderings can be found in our dataBase file, linked below. Want to get involved in the discussion? Check out the associated Forum threads, or leave a comment in the space provided at the bottom of this page.
