The streets west of Square One Shopping Centre in Mississauga are currently home to a cluster of cranes. This development boom in the heart of this western Greater Toronto Area city is exemplified by three concurrent side-by-side developments; Parkside Village’s Avia 1 & 2, Voya, and Phase One of the Square One District. The first two are designed by Turner Fleischer Architects for Amacon, with the third designed by Arcadis for Oxford Properties GroupThe Daniels Corporation, and AIMCo.

Oxford Properties Group, which owns the shopping centre and a significant amount of surrounding land, is working with The Daniels Corporation to realise their first residential towers as part of the Square One District master plan. It envisions a 130-acre mixed-use community boasting over 18,000 residential units when complete, centred around the mall and a transit mobility hub that will include the Hurontario LRT, now under construction.

The skyline here is currently punctuated by three cranes for Voya, two for Square One District, and one for the Avia towers. Going from west to east, today UrbanToronto is catching up on the latest construction at Voya, Avia, and Square One District.

Looking east from Zonta Meadows Park (above), construction on Voya is currently progressing on the first two and three storeys of the podium. Two cranes can be easily seen where the Voya towers will rise, while the vertical mast of a third crane above a corner of the podium pokes out of the frame on the right. The podium will feature commercial and retail spaces at ground level. Voya's 36- and 42-storey towers (rendered below) are meant to address the adjacent park through their stepped terrace design.

Construction on Avia 1 and 2, another of Amacon's Parkside Village developments, is much further along than Voya, with the eastern 38-storey tower topped off and a single tower crane still perched atop the tower to the left below, approaching its final height of 50 storeys. With glazing installation well underway — two columns of windows climb to the top of the shorter tower, and close to the top of the other — light-toned balcony guards are installed more than halfway up both towers. Avia's five-storey podium features red brick masonry that ties the towers to the pedestrian realm. Blue weather-protective wrap and temporary safety fencing is visible along the podium balconies where work continues.

Construction on the two towers of Phase One of Square One District is the furthesrt along on these three developments. Located along Confederation Parkway, one tower has topped off at 37 storeys while the other is on its way to 48 storeys. The image below captures the taller tower on the right with its black cladding chasing the forming, about seven storeys behind, while the shorter tower is now nearly fully clad. The external facade is clad with a mix of panels and glazing with thin mullions. The podium, which will house retail and commercial spaces at ground level along with suites and amenities above, features cladding with extending fins other than where the two-storey amenity space is enclosed in curtain wall, providing visual contrast.

More construction is underway south of Square One too, with three cranes each above the Exchange District Condos and M City sites. We will catch up with those in another update soon!

UrbanToronto will continue to follow progress on these developments, but in the meantime, you can learn more about them from our Database files, linked below.
