Nearly two years since our last look at Plaza on Yonge, the condo construction site has ascended for the bottom of its excavation pit to its podium floors. This 32-storey-to-be mixed-use tower from Plaza at 5840 Yonge Street is rising alongside a Subaru car dealership, on a site that was previously three low-rise commercial buildings. Situated about a ten-minute walk north of Finch station past the current end of Yonge Line 1, the BDP Quadrangle-designed development is poised to benefit from the Yonge North Subway Extension, enhancing its connectivity furth north to Richmond Hill.

As viewed from an aerial perspective a year after our last update in May, 2023, we see the concrete back wall of the new automotive dealership at the northeast corner fronting Yonge Street. It is situated adjacent to the planned POPS (Privately Owned Publicly accessible Space). Behind it, at the west end of the site, excavation for the condo tower features green and yellow excavators in the pit area. The site is secured with timber lagging seen on the east side adjacent to the future POPS, providing structural support to the surrounding earth. Meanwhile, the first phase podiums at the M2M Condos’ site can be seen just across the street, while the area for its next phases still lies vacant to the north.

As of July, 2023, the car dealership is mostly formed — two-storey steel framework close to Yogne Street, and concrete walls to the rear. The tower crane for the condo, positioned to the west, now stands over the site.

Fast-forward to March of this year, and we look westward on a foggy day to the ascent of the condo alongside the now-branded Subaru car dealership. Situated to the rear, the tower has ascended six storeys, with wooden formwork visible as preparations for the latest floor are underway. The residential tower wrap around the dealership with an L-shaped podium, the south volume currently at five storeys.

Moving around to the west , we now look back eastwards to observe the west to see the poured concrete for the first six storeys of the podium. Shoring posts are interspersed between concrete walls, remaining to support the recently formed floor slabs as they continue to cure. The active tower crane, with its jib currently lowered, is engaged in operations on the south side of the latest storey. In the backdrop, the towers of the M2M Condos' first phase are visible, peering over the construction in progress.

As the Plaza on Yonge joins M2M on this part of North York’s skyline, it will reach a height of 108.7m, providing 407 residential units to the neighbourhood.
