Despite a current slowdown in new development applications, construction work in Toronto and the GTA has been proceeding at its standard rate, outpacing every other city in North America. For most cities around the world, handling this level of construction activity would likely cause the system to implode in a matter of months; here however, we deal with the disruptions and call it business as usual.

With a mittful of projects emerging from their construction phase across the GTA over the last few months, here is a roundup of the most recent completions. For more info and images and commentary on these projects, click the link embedded in the name to visit its Database file and on to its associated Forum thread.

The Towers:

The Taylor | 36 Storeys

A new tower, designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects, has joined the western edge of the ever-changing downtown skyline, a 36-storey residential development, the Taylor, from Tricon Residential and MOD Developments. Unlike the majority of its neighbouring condo towers, however, the Taylor is purpose built rental, offering 286 units at market rate.

45 Railroad | 25 Storeys

This residential development in Brampton features a podium with a unique industrial heritage component that frames a pair of 25-storey towers. The project, from developers Boardwalk REIT and Redwood Properties, began occupancy in November.

Regent Park: Daniels Artworks Tower | 33, 11 Storeys

With the Daniels Artworks Tower wrapping up, the quadrant of residential developments fronting both sides of Dundas Street East in the heart of Regent Park comes to completion. Split between the mid-rise and the tower, the Daniels Corporation project delivers a total of 440 new units to the community.

Islington Terrace | 45, 44, 35 Storeys

The completion of Islington Terrace brings a new standard for height to the Islington neighbourhood in Etobicoke. The three towers, designed by Kirkor Architects Planners, are the tallest in the immediate area, at least for now.

Azura Condos | 32 Storeys

This new North York tower from Capital Developments enjoyed a strong performance in UrbanToronto's 2022 Year-End Reader's Poll. The stylish exterior from IBI Group gives the tower a contemporary feel, a quality that resonated with our readers who voted the project second in its group.

205 Queen St E | 31, 22 Storeys

Hazelview Investments has successfully delivered a new residential development to Brampton's Queen Street East, the strip that has been that City's hot-spot for intensification. The two-tower project stands out with a geometric balcony pattern credited to Graziani + Corazza Architects

Symphony Condominiums | 23, 5 Storeys

Another Brampton project also located on Queen Street East came to completion in recent months, this time from developer Inzola. Dubbed Symphony Condominiums, the project delivers a residential tower as well as a separate 5-storey commercial building.

St Lawrence Condos at 158 Front | 26, 26 Storeys

The collaborative effort of Cityzen Development Group and Fernbrook Homes has resulted in the completion of a visually distinct 2-tower development on the edge of the St Lawrence Neighbourhood. Designed by architects—Alliance, the project comprises a number of boxy volumes that are stacked to create interesting overhangs and recesses.

Scala | 18 Storeys

With the completion of Scala, Tridel has delivered 536 new dwelling units in an area with exceptional access to the extensive Don Valley Ravine network. Fronting Leslie Street, north of Sheppard, the Wallman Architects-designed building gradually steps down towards the green expanse to the west.

The Mid-Rises:

York University: School of Continuing Studies | 5 Storeys

As York University continues to expand their facilities for their growing student base, the institution has set the bar high with their newest building, the School of Continuing Studies. The formally striking 5-storey building designed by Perkins&Will features a skewed massing that almost appears to be an optical illusion.

York University: The Quad Student Residence Phase 2 | 8, 8 Storeys

York University has also been improving their offerings for student living, most recently with the creation of a new residence, The Quad Phase 2. Designed by ARK Inc, the second phase of the Quad delivers 423 new student suites in a pair of linked black-and-white volumes.

U of T: Robarts Library Renovations & Robarts Common | 5 Storeys

As enrolment continues to grow at the University of Toronto, an expansion of the iconic brutalist-style Robarts Library has been on the books for years. With the help of Diamond Schmitt Architects, the extension has finally been realized, creating new social workspaces and while earning LEED Silver rating.

Orca | 7 Storeys

East Toronto's Upper Beach neighbourhood welcomes 75 new dwelling units from the compact new residential development, Orca, by Demirov Fine Homes. The project boasts a terraced massing common at this scale, with a massing that follows the angles of Kingston Road and Main Street.

Lofthouse on Logan | 6 Storeys

The mid-rise trend continues on the western edge of Leslieville with the completion of Lofthouse on Logan, from Grid Developments. The project delivers 58 new dwelling units while featuring a grade level retail unit that has been occupied by a Beer Store.

The Low-Rises:

12 Ossington | 4 Storeys

Hullmark continues their development efforts in Toronto's stylish west-end with a new commercial project at the bottom of Ossington Avenue. Designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects, the low-rise office building's brick facade greets the street with distinctive arches.

New Frontiers Aboriginal Residential Corporation Affordable Housing | 3 Storeys

This small infill project adds 12 new units to an existing affordable housing complex in The Beach, effectively repurposing land that was occupied by surface parking. The house-shaped massing features a mix of wood and brick finishes for a rustic primary elevation.

Maxx Urban Towns | 3 Storeys

A new residential community was completed in Pickering, adding 216 new units in the form of 3-storey townhomes. The project was developed by the team of VanMar Developments and Trillium Housing

540 Cedarvale | 3 Storeys

The City of Toronto recently completed housing project located on the edge of East York. The development is part of Toronto's Modular Housing Initiative, with designs by Montgomery Sisam Architects, and detailed in the HousingTO 2020-2030 Action Plan.

36 Birch | 4 Storeys

North Drive Investments Inc has completed their stacked townhouse project, 36 Birch, located steps west of Summerhill Station. The project delivers 27 new dwelling units with a contextually sensitive design featuring red brick with black accents.

17 Vickers | 1 Storey

Grocery chain Metro recently opened their newest distribution facility in Etobicoke, just south of Dundas and The East Mall. The industrial food storage facility only stands 1 storey, but appears quite massive from the outside, making 50 foot trucks look like toy cars.
