Two and a half years into the construction of the new St Lawrence Market North Building, the five-storey structure at Jarvis and Front in Downtown Toronto has progressed significantly since our last report in November. With most of the steel structure now in place for the Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners-designed building, the Buttcon Limited job for the City of Toronto is now seeing window and bright orange aluminum fins being attached to its exterior, offering the first hints of the pop of colour the building will bring to the area.

The first fins have been installed on the third floor, and will eventually cover the second through fourth storeys, grouped between structural columns. Besides bringing a pop of colour, the fins will act as brise soleils, meaning that they will cut down on direct sunlight entering the building and make cooling it more efficient in the summer.

Below, a window panel with the fins already integrated into the unit is guided into place by crew members on the third and fourth floors. A mobile crane can just be made out through the steel structure on the fifth floor, from which crew members lowered the window unit.

It's not clear why integrated fins were not installed along with the second floor windows, but slots to eventually receive the fins can be seen in the mullions between the windows on that level.

Upon completion, the upper storeys at the new building will provide state-of-the-art space for the City's traffic courts, relocating from several locations around Toronto, including Old City Hall. The street level will host the Saturday Farmers’ Market and Sunday Antique Market which were traditionally held in the previous building on the site, but which have been operating as of late in a temporary structure to the south of the main St Lawrence Market building. Below the development a 250-space underground garage will operate.
We will continue to follow progress on the development, but in the meantime, you can learn more about it from our Database file, linked below. If you'd like, you can join in on the conversation in the associated Project Forum thread, or leave a comment in the space provided on this page.
