The strip of hotels along Jarvis Street on the east side of Downtown Toronto has been gradually shrinking as more of the aging buildings have been lost to redevelopment as condos. Having lost the Primrose Hotel and Hilton Garden Inn over the last half dozen years, and as demolition of the former Grand Hotel progresses just south of Dundas and on the former Comfort Inn just south of Gerrard, a new hotel is rising—for a change—into this strip on the northeast corner at Shuter Street. Being built by Manga Hotels, the new shared hotel/rental tower will be known as the Hyatt Place and The 203 Residences on Jarvis.

The 32-storey mixed-use, IBI Group-designed development has been under construction since November, 2019, when shoring rigs arrived to begin drilling around the site perimeter. Following excavation of the building's 4.5-level pit, a tower crane was installed at its base last September, kicking off the forming stage. Ten months since our last update, the below-grade forming is finished, with work now reaching the third floor slab.

The building is set to rise to an eventual height of 108 metres/354 feet, a process that will establish a speedier pace as forming crews arrive at the repeating floor layouts.

Upon completion, the tower is set to host a 240-suite Hyatt Place hotel in its lower two-fifths, and 179 residential rental units in the upper three-fifths. These volumes are to be separated by a double-level amenities section with an outdoor terrace, the upper storeys supported by a line of V-columns that transfer the load from the apartment floors down through the hotel below.
