The next stage of construction has begun for Minto Communities GTA's new condominium tower 'The Saint', soon to rise at Church and Lombard streets in Downtown Toronto. Named in reference to nearby St James Cathedral, The Saint is a 47-storey, Wallman Architects-designed project that will climb 151 metres high, work towards which can now accelerate following the latest milestone in its construction, ongoing since late 2020.

Shoring began last November, followed by excavation of an extra-deep pit carved 20 metres below street level. The cavernous excavation recently bottomed out, with preparation underway for crane installation at the time of our last update in June. Earlier this month, the tower crane was fixed to the crane base installed a couple weeks before.

Now that the project's forming can begin, over the coming months the pit's sizeable depth will be filled in by six below-grade levels, with initial activity carried out in depths not easily seen by passersby. Forming of the underground will continue for several months before the ground floor's walls and columns emerge above Church Street.

While deeper than a typical condo tower excavation, the underground floors will provide parking for just 86 vehicles, 79 of them for residents and seven for visitors. The remaining underground structure is to house a mix of bicycle parking, storage lockers, and building services like electrical and telecommunications equipment rooms.

The Saint is scheduled to welcome its first residents in 2023, bringing 418 new high-rise homes to a stretch of Church Street that itself is home to a growing collection of high-rise developments.
