Across the various formats of multi-unit residential developments being built across the Toronto region, townhome projects typically offer self-contained suites but little in the way of communal amenity space. Rise Developments is shedding that mold with their new Amsterdam Towns project, named for Amsterdam Avenue which intersects with O'Connor Drive just to the east of the project site.

Now under construction in the northeast corner of East York, the Guthrie Muscovitch Architects-designed complex is bringing 52 townhomes to the site in two four-storey blocks, with units ranging in area from 1,325 ft² to 1,365 ft². As seen in many other local townhome projects, the units are to feature private rooftop terraces that give residents their own customizable outdoor space…

…but unlike most townhome developments, Amsterdam Towns is offering residents a limited collection of shared amenities that will help foster a community atmosphere within the complex. In a standalone structure at the rear of the site, residents will be able to enjoy a party room that offers a kitchen and dining area for entertaining guests, with wood finishes and furnishings creating a connection between the interior space and the building's natural exterior finishes…

…and a fitness centre which will include treadmills, ellipticals, and weights within a space benefiting from ample natural light through a skylight and a full wall of mirrors.

Next to the standalone amenity structure, a playground will serve the many families with children expected to take up residence in the complex's multi-bedroom offerings.

Meanwhile, as marketing reveals more about life within the development, construction is now in its early stages following recent site clearing work. A drilling rig is now working its way around the site perimeter to form the shoring system that will support the upcoming excavation.
