Menkes Developments celebrated an important construction milestone last month with the topping off of the first phase office tower at Sugar Wharf on Toronto's Waterfront LCBO lands. Weeks later, more progress has been recorded on the 25-storey, B+H Architects-designed 100 Queens Quay East office tower, as well as the architectsAlliance-designed Sugar Wharf Condos Phase 1 towers that will eventually rise 64 and 70 storeys to the north.
In the short while since the office tower's elevator core topped out at 117 metres, the installation of structural steel has begun that will frame the mechanical penthouse level and extend the tower's roofline. Exterior finish installation has also accelerated in the past few weeks, with the building's textured, dark-tinted curtainwall glazing now extending to the 25th and final habitable floor.
The 690,000 ft² tower is targeting LEED Platinum certification, with an opening slated for 2021. LCBO will anchor the building, occupying 33% of the total gross floor area, including a 25,000 ft² flagship retail location on the ground floor, while the Toronto Region Board of Trade will also occupy another large share of the building, including a corporate event space and outdoor terrace.
To the north of the office building, two-tower Sugar Wharf Phase 1 complex has made substantial progress since we last checked in on its podium forming in late June. In our last update, the fifth floor of the massive podium had recently been poured, along with the first signs of the extra-thick columns that will span several storeys and transfer the structural loads of the point towers down through the podium and underground levels to the foundations below.
Aerial views of the site show that the final level of the podium's southern volume is now taking shape, as the taller north podium volume continues its rise. At the southeast corner, the extra-thick structural columns now rise prominently with the first few floors of the southeast tower's footprint.

The now-prominent southeast tower will rise 64 storeys to an eventual height of 218 metres, while the northwest tower soon to emerge is set to rise 70 storeys to 230 metres.
