Approaching the two-year anniversary of the opening of the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre subway station, Vaughan's new downtown is already filling out. The most significant development unfolding in the area is SmartCentres and CentreCourt's 100-acre master-planned community, known as Transit City at SmartCentres Place. The initial phase of the Diamond Schmitt Architects-designed community is already well under construction, with the first trio of 55-storey condominium towers well on their way to final heights of 176 m/578 ft.

We last checked in on the construction progress in late August, when the northwest tower was having its 44th floor formed, the southwest tower stood 35 storeys tall, and the northeast tower stood at 7 storeys. The northwest tower now stands 54 storeys tall, leaving just one residential level to form, while the southwest tower follows close behind, having its 48th level formed. The northeast tower lags behind its siblings, with forming now reaching the 21st level.

Cladding installation has also made swift progress during the past few months, enclosing the buildings in a mix of reflective blue-tinted windows divided by slender vertical mullions in a pattern of staggered white frames. The northwest tower was enclosed up to level 35 at the time of our last update, and has since been clad as high as the 48th floor. The south tower was enclosed as high as the 21st floor as of August, and has since been clad as high as the 40th floor. The northeast tower is now seeing major progress on cladding installation, with finishes installed up to level 12.

As the first three towers add a defining presence to the nascent Vaughan skyline, the next phase of development has begun construction. Just east of the first three towers, work began on future phases TC4 and TC5 in late summer. Shoring for the project was ongoing as of late October, and recent photos show that the first tower crane has been raised to construct the next phase. TC4 and TC5 will bring two more condo towers to the area, along with a a purpose-built rental building.
