Midtown Toronto’s ongoing real-estate renaissance continues to draw in both home buyers and investors at a steady pace. With construction now underway on the 19-kilometre Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown LRT, Yonge and Eglinton’s shining future as Midtown's primary transit hub is drawing closer to fruition. The surrounding community has seen unprecedented intensification in recent years, with countless current and proposed residential developments continuing to reshape the neighbourhood skyline.
Rising directly adjacent to Eglinton Station, the eastern portion of The Berwick and CityTowns is now a full floor above grade along Berwick Avenue and a short stretch of Duplex Avenue. Construction work on the 17-storey condominium and townhome development, by Andrin Homes and The Brown Group of Companies, commenced in early 2012 with the demolition of the single family homes formerly located on-site.
In the time since, the Page + Steele-designed project has risen above street level, overcoming delays caused by groundwater in the process. Work on the northern half of the site, where the CityTowns portion will rise, was slowed down temporarily as dewatering teams rushed to rectify the problem. Although this portion of the project’s footprint has yet to breach the surface, the groundwater issues have been tackled and concrete work on the northern underground floors has picked up significantly since our last visit in April.
With just under a year to go until the tentative occupancy date of March 2014, the race is on to complete the 205-unit townhouse/condo development.
