Yonge-Dundas Square/Sankofa Square (Brown + Storey Architects)

Well, screw that crappy ass sign which is a pathetic reminder of a time when the city wasn't really that great. Toronto FC won their first MLS championship tonight! That's the Toronto of today, and, hopefully, the future!

Nobody cares about MLS soccer
Ouch. As a matter of fact, 30,000 people packed BMO field, and many more attended the viewing party at Liberty Village. I watched the game at home and enjoyed every minute of it. So based on these facts, many do care about MLS soccer.
Having said that, our city should not be defined by our sports teams.
And this is way off topic...

These shots were all taken yesterday, within 79 seconds, around 3:34 PM.

From just below the sign, going telephoto, the camera picks up the lights.

From the same position, no telephoto, so more like what you see from ground level:

In both shots, in partial cloud, the slats look more black than red.

Back up to the other side of the square though, and the slats look like an unfinished sign, and the lights have disappeared to a great degree, the records totally gone.

This thing only works at night, and as discussed above, not as well as it really should.

Just complete incompetence. If they had to have slats, they should have at the very least tested the mounting structure in place before finishing the sign. They probably raised it in the warehouse and viewed from a short distance away, looking up, it looked red and black. But their warehouse isn't the size of Yonge Dundas Square where people coming out of the Eaton Centre or walking along Dundas will see the piece of shit that we now see.

This could have been corrected with slanted slats at about a 45º angle. It would have allowed wind through but look completely flat from every angle. Nonetheless, this is not the Sam the Record Man sign. It's a cheap imitation. So much for heritage designation.

Won't most people see this from Yonge Street? So all they will see is the screwed up version. Either view, I think it's still unacceptable!

What was the purpose of the "Heritage Designation" if they are allowed to completely alter the sign any way they want? I think it's pointless and worthless! It just makes a mockery of the whole process. If it has no teeth, just get rid of it?

I want to know if anybody from the city was aware of what Ryerson planned to do and if so, who approved it or did the city just completely forget about this sign after Ryerson took it?

Had they welded the slats at a 45 deg. angle, the sign would have looked solid from Yonge St. Just wait until spring and all the birds return. That sign with be full of nests. What a great idea...not. Very disappointing!

Disappointing is an understatement!

It will be eco-friendly at least. Seems so simple to have slightly angled the slats, it makes the work on this seem all the more half-arsed.
