What's the future for the Conservative Party?

A document that suggested Alberta students learn about the positive aspects of Nazi Germany has been deleted from the Ministry of Education's website, following criticism from multiple groups.

The document, a set of guidelines for "recognizing diversity and promoting respect," suggested considering whether a given educational resource addressed "both the positive and negative behaviours" of various groups.

"For instance," it read, "if a video details war atrocities committed by the Nazis, does it also point out that before World War II, German government's policies substantially strengthened the country's economy?"

OTTAWA—A Conservative senator has launched a petition seeking to oust Erin O’Toole as Tory leader, citing the party’s recent election performance and divisions within it as the impetus behind the push.

“On behalf of Conservative activists and members from coast to coast, we started this petition because we don’t want to see this party ripped apart again. When we’re divided, the Liberals win. Under Erin O’Toole’s leadership, the rift in our party is growing,” Sen. Denise Batters said in a video posted to her Twitter account on Monday.

“As leader, Mr. Toole has watered down and even entirely reversed our policy positions without the input of party or caucus members on carbon tax, on guns, on conscience rights. He flip-flopped on our policies within the same week, the same day and even within the same sentence,” she added.


In order for the call to launch a leadership view to succeed, at least five per cent of Conservative party members in at least five provinces must sign the petition within the next 90 days.
 
The vultures really seem to be circling for O'Toole. What's their real beef with him? Is it that he lost an election to Trudeau? Is it, as Batters claims, that he's not ideologically pure enough for the more reactionary wing of the party? Or is it simply a matter of hyenas gathering because some of them have their eyes on the top spot, and think they can wrestle it away for themselves?

He had some high profile flip-flops - e.g. guns - which no doubt really ticked off certain wings of the party. Also the ability to silence internal critics is sort of dependent on winning elections - and he couldn't do it. I am sure PPC nipping at their support didn't help the moving to the centre argument either. Being from Ontario probably sowed some suspicion from AB/SK heavy party members as well.

Mutiny from his Senators is hardly a vote of confidence!

OTTAWA - Sen. Denise Batters may no longer be welcome in the Conservatives’ national caucus but she’s still a member of the party’s Senate caucus.

Conservative senators have chosen to keep Batters in their fold, notwithstanding party leader Erin O’Toole’s decision Tuesday to kick her out of the national caucus after she challenged his leadership.

Karine Leroux, spokeswoman for Conservative Senate leader Don Plett, confirmed Thursday that “Sen. Batters is still a current member of the Senate Conservative Caucus.” She declined to elaborate, saying that “would encroach on caucus confidentiality.” The decision to keep Batters in their caucus suggests Conservative senators are defying O’Toole, who warned Wednesday that anyone supporting her attempt to force an early confidence vote on his leadership would be kicked out of national caucus for not being a team player.
