369 Church Street Weston

I found an interesting website - link

It shows this picture

It's stated as 369 Church Street, Weston. You can see the numbers on the house agree with that.

I went to find the modern-day equivalent, but numbers on Church don't go that high. I searched up Maple Leaf, thinking maybe that used to be Church, but nothing matched. Then I searched the other way and found this:

It appears to be the same house, numbered 217. Was Church renumbered for some reason, or am I looking at the wrong house?

There are several reasons I can think of.

1. Church Street used to end around the area of elm street where it ran into the estate of William Tyrell. The steet east of Elm was called Beach St. for many years.

2. Many houses on Church closer to Weston Rd. around the railway corridor have been torn down to make way for appartment buildings, and some larger lots have been subdivided over the years.

3. The area where Humber Hospital is located may have once contained houses, but I think that land was vacant (an old farm perhaps) before the hospital was built.

Church St. may be the oldest street in Weston besides Weston Rd. and it has an interesting history. the street may have been re-numbered several times.

Weston has a lot of empty stores these days...go up Weston or Jane Street and you can count at least 10 store for sale or rent for every two blocks.The mega stores are killing the small mom and pop stores.This area must have the most hair and nail salons per 1000 meters anywhere in the GTA,most of this fronts though for illegal activities.......

Weston and Lawrence has the built-form potential to be the centre of a vibrant, urban area, but distance from downtown combined with a lack of rapid transit connections has unfortunately isolated it. It's a shame because it's in an awful state currently.

I have a friend who owns a business at Weston & Lawrence (the photography studio in the base of the apartment building) and we were discussing this recently. How Weston really was a jewel of a neighbourhood, but in the past 10+ years we've seen it deteriorate.

I'm curious, what can be done? When the Western Tavern shut down I was disappointed because the new owners have made it into what now it seems a very rowdy restaurant (from the outside). In my opinion they've bastardized the facade of the restaurant, as has the store that now occupies the old CIBC building. Walking up and down Weston Road the whole neighbourhood feel cheap now. I had high hopes when that one store north of the CIBC building went up for lease, but now it's another quick money exchange place (an independent version of Money Mart).

Short of rebuilding the transit system, what can be done? And not just at Weston and Lawrence, but I'd love to see the Jane/Weston / Weston/Lawrence / Jane/Lawrence triangle improve. The strip of Weston Road between Jane and Lawrence is nothing but used car lots from what I can tell, even the Little Tony's (arguably one of the better pizza places around I thought) is gone.

Replacing banks with payday loan stores is not a good way to improve the situation.

Do anyone have the plans for the empty lot that used to be a car dealer, just south of Weston and Lawrence? I think the GO Train station maybe shifted south a bit. I just hope it would not be turned into a parking lot like some American city.

Well it is being turned into a parking lot for the GO Station which is being moved out of the neighbourhood.

I will tell you whats wrong with Weston. Its the very fact that the residents continue to elect the same elected officials who have done very little.
The community housing that lines Weston Rd and Jane Street are extremely neglected.
Stores are being replaced with hair salons, dollar stores and payday loans. Why would you locate a business in an area where residents do not support local stores, the BIA collects fees and has failed, and the streetscape......

So what can we do?

Can you elaboroate on which units are community housing? I actually don't know what is, or what qualifies for it.

In lieu of hair salons, dollar stores and payday loans, what kinds of businesses do you think local residents would support? As a resident myself I'd love to see a proper coffee shop as a start, and I don't mean the one that is on the corner of Weston & Lawrence across from the Scotia bank. I think part of the problem is that whoever owns the properties hasn't done anything to update it or clean it up. The strip mall on the north-west corner of Jane & Lawrence is horrible.

Does anyone know what processes are availabe? I mean, would performing a proper survey on the area help at all, that way we could establish what residents actually want?

And I'll claim absolute ignorance here: who IS the elected official now, and why are they any worse (or better) than people who normally run for election? Yes, I'm openly admiting my lack of knowledge for the current situation, but that is why I'm posting here, so that I can learn more of what IS the problem, and what we can do..

Weston Sucks!!

If anything can "gentrify" Weston, bring it on! It's a community with a lot of nice old houses on the side streets east of Weston Road and north of Lawrence. At one time you could imagine it having been a real community, with its own neighbourhood shopping, etc. It's gone downhill considerably, with several apartment buildings which are one step above slums, and an awful lot of cheap-looking stores on Weston Road.

I don't know about it being a nice neighbourhood. Get rid of the losers and crackheads off the streets, there may be some hope. Other than that, there are a lot of nicer communities in Toronto.

It has a lot of assets in spite of its present social problems. It's harder and harder to afford the "nicer communities", so Weston will hopefully be seen for its strengths and potential by more rather than ignored.
