Union Station: Union Pearson Group Proposal

^
The Union subway station was said to be one of the key pieces that need to be put in place to redevelop the waterfront. Looks like they're moving at a snails pace which would lead me to guess that we won't have an expanded platform any time before 2007 as predicted. Odds are it'll be more like 2010.

This is indeed the best news in a long time for this project.
I hope they sign it in May, who knows what cud happen b4 then.. lol.. all and all, its about time!

Does anyone have a birds-eye view of the site showing the plans?

Also, does the project include re-roofing the actual platforms?

Earlier posts suggest that GO maybe responsible for looking after the track area which I guess would include the main shelter over the platforms?

^It is my understanding that this proposal has noting to do with the train shed or track areas of the station.

^ My God, the state of the roof on that picture is horrendous.

Re: Union subway station:

(a) For some reason which I have yet to understand the station expansion is part of the whole waterfront development plan, which has been mired in ongoing political gridlock.
(b) The TTC is putting capital dollars toward new buses, new subway trains, and (soon) new streetcars. After those are taken care of, there will be the matter of replacing the Scarborough light rail line. I don't think much if anything is left over. Funding from the gas tax hasn't fully kicked in yet and may not, if the new federal government decides to go in a different direction.

Why does the lease have to be for 100 years?

I'm thinking of putting myself in cryostasis so I can see what Union Station looks like when done properly because the pics in the Union Pearson plan look really cheap and poorly done. Are the pictures from the LP Heritage proposal still around for comparison to remind us of the great loss? Why not make the lease 50 years so we can fight the battle one more time to do it right before we die. I can't believe I will have to suffer looking at Union Station for the rest of my life knowing what could have been as per the LP Heritage proposal.

Sorry for the negativity. I find Union Pearson's plan depressing.

Sorry, but who negotiated this deal for the city- was it Tannenbaum himself??

First the Eucan negotiation, then this? Jesus, who is their negotiator..? Its f-ing rediculous..

it's that bad? i hope they don't damage the historical nature of the building.

That's what I was getting at and it is particulary evident to any visitors/tourists viewing from the CN tower. Doesn't really do the city any favours, does it?!

Would be nice to see a nice curvy glass lattice structure or something along the lines of some European stations to cover the tracks and make the aerial view much more pleasant.

Based on the plan the only thing they plan on doing to the Great Hall is change the clock, find people to fill the hall with, and make the sun shine brighter.

I think the LP Heritage moat proposal was far more desirable and less cheap looking. The Union Pearson plan covers the moat with a filmsy glass canopy and does not climate control the moat whereas the LP Heritage plan looked much more architecturally pleasing and was fully climate controlled. It makes a lot more sense to me that if the plan is to make the moat more usable and prevent people from going outside between the TTC Station and the Railway Station that a climate controlled moat is the way to go.

Every aspect of LP Heritage's proposal was more attractive and they kept their modifications more in tune with the style of Union Station than Union Pearson's plans. Look at the teamway picture... have you ever seen anything more gaudy? To think that the teamway picture is a rendering and that it could turn out worse. Shudder.

if they can't do a good job, they should just leave it untill they can.

why did they choose the cheapo route?

P.S, a good way for the city to raise money is to cover the trainshed roof with solar panels and sell electricity back to the grid. this way they can help finance some of the costs.

The sad part is the LP Heritage plan wouldn't have really costed more. If it wasn't for the messed up voting process LP Heritage would be implementing their plan right now.
