TTC: Other Items (catch all)

The cynic in me says bars and restaurants will have a special NYE service with prices 13% higher than last year.

But I think a bigger factor is NYE was Sunday last year, so it was the middle day of a long weekend that most people have off work.

This year it's on Tuesday which might cut down on the number of people wanting to go out as it is a regular business day, well not really "regular," but most people will have had to work during the day at some point, and that will leave people tired and more willing to stay at home than go out, even if Wednesday is a holiday.
I think the biggest turn off would be the possibility of freezing rain that evening. It'll be an evening of soggy light rain with moderate winds with a low pressure system passing south of the lake. Great idea to weaken your immune system with all these people breathing over you. Yeah, I'll pass.

Looking at the forecast at Weather there's only light drizzle. Temperature is above freezing for days beforehand. Won't be freezing rain - if some falls, it won't accumulate.

Looking at windy.com the 8 computer models there show all above freezing. Only one is as low as +1C.

Should be fine and well attended. And much warmer than it could be at midnight.

Not my cup of tea - but we are too old for that kind of thing. Winds are light - about 20 klicks. Weathernet says 14 with gusts to 21.

You are never too old to see firework, but are if you are a sleep before midnight. Depending on the weather and temperature, don't attend the fireworks or party or even go out. We are not party people going to clubs or bars.

I walk down to the lake twice a year to watch the 10 pm Victoria and Canada Day fireworks. For decades.

Seems like a lot of work to go down to the midnight ones on New Years Day. Did they do that before 2020? I don't even know how big the display is - I thought it was only a couple of minutes.

I keep forgetting to mention this, but I don't think it's been posted here yet.
Sometime around two weeks ago the TTC added another stop for the 501 diversion, this time for eastbound streetcars on York street about half way between Richmond and Adelaide.
I do mean half way, it's not close to the corner. It's a very unusual placement.

Not sure how this will manifest as the night progresses with New Year’s Eve events but there are already major delays on the YUS line from Bloor to Finch due to an earlier situation. Delays at the moment are up to 10mins. (Was just on the subway).

It looks like the TTC isn’t going to do anything about it and it will most likely compound as events wrap up.

TTC had a lot of issues hours before New Year and up to 10 minutes before the year ended. Got on an westbound train at Warden that arrived about 2 minutes after the one I miss. After leaving Victoria Park, we came to a crawl in the tunnel to Main Station and stop for a few minutes as we crawling into Main. Gable gable was hear over the PA system and no clue what was being said. The platform was full as though a train went out of service, but close to haft the riders did not get on the train which indicated there was a problem on the line. We then crawl, stop, sit numerous time up to Woodbine. As we slowly travel to Woodbine, a crew member made announcements that there was no service between Woodbine and Broadview with nothing been said about shuttle buses which would be a major problem for routes they got pull off. As we pull into Woodbine, no announce was made about the train going out of service to deal with the no service issue. This meant the issue west of Woodbine had clear up. It was slow going to Broadview where I got off to get the 504.

After checking out the Distillery District, I decided to walk back to the loop to get the 504 than walking in the drizzle to to King St and a mistake on my part not doing it. After waiting 25 minutes at the loop and check the next vehicle info, the info said no service until 2 am which I thought was odd. As I hit King 3 eastbound cars where arriving playing follow the leader and saying there were issues in the west. As I cross the street, a 504A show up and then turn toward the loop. A westbound was pulling up to my stop. After getting off, noticed the next 504A was due in 10 minutes with the next one 30 minute behind it That was odd also as two 504A departed 5 minutes behind each other. There was 18 minutes between the 503 going west.

The 504's and 503's had to deal with southbound traffic on Bay St that were blocking all east-west movements. In fact all southbound traffic was backup for most major roads including Cherry St.

Never saw an 501 on Richmond or Adelaide St. As I was heading to St Andrew, a 501 was turning south and westbound at University Ave. A couple minutes later, another eastbound was heading to York St.

While waiting for a northbound train at St Andrew, a southbound train honk it horn which was odd as there were very few riders on the platform. Walk over to have a look, it was stop at the north end with a red light at the south end. I noticed a supervisor talking to the driver and the the train honk again as it slowly enter the station. The train was out of service and thought they were going to put it in the pocket to deal with Union. I walked back over to my side and notice the display screen saying service had resumed between Museum and Union 10 minutes before New Year. I thought, was this the problem train for no service or a spare?

There was no issues on Line 2 to Islington, but stop and go to Kipling.

The night was a mix bag from no rain at various to drizzle to light rain a time as well. Crowd heading to the waterfront on Bay for the fireworks was light and expected it to be smaller than past years. I chose to not take it in this year due to the rain. Very few people skating at city hall with more watch those who were skating or walking around the area.

Yesterday’s weather isn’t ideal at all. It was rainy more than a drizzle at times. Wet weather itself already creates more traffic as people slow down. So I’m not surprised streetcar service wasn’t functioning normally.
As for the turn out, that’s self explanatory.

The kiss & Ride with cab space has been paved and strip at Kipling, but not open. The fence will remain up around it until all the construction material is removed. Photos for December are on line, but not last night shots.

Don't know when Warden temporary bus bays are to open, but far from doing so as of last night. Try to get some shots, but mostly ended up with rain on them. The walkway from the bus bay area .to the concourse is not completed as well from the street. Only saw 5 shelters with 2 on Warden at the current entrance and may miss a few due to the rain and darkness. The cab with the Kiss & Ride area is ready to open at the south end as well the bus bays as they are paved and strip. Going be some long walks getting to/from the North Parking Lot, the street and the bus bays to/from the subway,

A big different from what I shot early November 27 to yesterday. The gates to the concourse are not fully install and going to be fund funneling riders in both directions through that narrow gate area.

No idea if they will have washrooms in a portal trailer on site since the washrooms will be gone when the new bus bays open, other than going to Kennedy or Victoria Park stations that have washrooms now. If you look out the window of an westbound train, you can see the new area clearly. Daylight the best time to see it.

All the phots from November 27 are now up on my site which is a lot and still running a month behind with a 1,000 still in my backlog including last night shots.

Thank you for your latest pics and updates Drum.

A couple of notes to share:

I don't see any temporary washrooms within the interim configuration, but if done via trailer, that might not be on the drawings.

There will be new washrooms in the final version of Warden.

other than going to Kennedy or Victoria Park stations that have washrooms now.

There are no public washrooms at Victoria Park.

I know there is a plan for washrooms in the new terminal and there should be more in other stations since bus rides can be 30+ and nature can't always wait. Considering I shoot Victoria from start to finished, I was sure there was a washroom there and it been some time I have been there.

A temporary washrooms trailer could work for the temporary bus bays, but haven't follow the plans for the station nor know if it will happen.
