What difference does it make? It's not as if train has an independent supply of air. Sooner or later everyone would be inhaling smoke. I'd be worried about escaping a potential fire.

It's not about "heroics", it's about not wanting to become a skeletal remain while waiting for the TTC to figure out what's going on.Unless the train is on fire, there isn't any reason to start with the useless heroics and endangering yourself and others.
Cool, and endangering everyone else while you panic like an idiot. It's not about "heroics", it's about not wanting to become a skeletal remain while waiting for the TTC to figure out what's going on.
Look up 'DRL' if you need.
Except they don't there are some lights above the doors that stay on. I was on a train Monday morning that lost power in-between Chester and Pape. The driver of the train was able to cost the train into Pape so that people could get off the train if they needed to.Also don't forget - the lights supposed to have gone out in that train

It is interesting that many pass calm judgement on the reaction of others faced with a frightening and unfamiliar situation from the comfort of a keyboard, As several have mentioned, the action is not necessarily condoned as it is understood. Absent training, the survival response is visceral, not rational.
I think the axe has been axed. The tool cabinets appear to be empty on most cars now. They should and I am surprised they do not. GO transit has an axe onboard but they do not have a smoke detector.
