TTC: Other Items (catch all)

TTC service on Line 2 suspended for police investigation

February 2, 2018

At approximately 5:30 a.m., TTC staff identified signal issues in the area of Royal York Station.

It has been determined the issues were the result of a deliberate act of vandalism to TTC equipment.

Toronto Police Service was alerted and is now investigating.

Failsafe mechanisms were in place and working, allowing subways to operate safely through the area.

In order to accommodate the investigation, the TTC has shut down subway service on Line 2 between Kipling and Jane stations as of 10 a.m.

The investigation could take several hours, during which time 40 to 50 express shuttle buses will service stations in the closure area.
Stations impacted are Kipling, Islington, Royal York and Old Mill.

TTC customers heading to and from Pearson Airport can use UP Express via Dundas West Station using a TTC fare.

TTC customers can also use GO Transit on a TTC fare during the closure.

The TTC will issue service updates as needed.

All questions related to the investigation should be directed to Toronto Police.

Count me as not surprised - and that it didn't happen more often.

The bigger question is how can someone enter a tunnel, vandalize a signal and not be noticed.

Also the signal is located westbound at Royal York.

How could they not? It isn't like we haven't seen graffiti at the various subway portals and even inside the tunnels themselves. If you can get access to spray, you can also vandalize.

Interesting one can use UPX:

Customers travelling to Toronto Pearson Airport can utilize the UP Express and Go Lakeshore Line at no additional cost due to a Toronto Police Investigation at Royal York Station.

Let's keep it that way.

Here's a random video I stumbled across.

It is entertaining but sad at the same time. It is sad to see how our system has ended up after so many years of neglect. The TTC when they made this video had a decent system BUT they were too focused on expansion and not about SOGR which lead to the Russell Hill incident 3 years after this video was made.

Now they are playing catch up with the maintenance side of things to deal with all the expansion projects.

The TTC was already well in decline at the time of the video - just that the public didn't really know how bad it is.

Since that video was made, we extended Spadina extension to Sheppard at 2km, then 6km Sheppard subway, then 8km Vaughan extension. I wouldn't call adding 16km onto a 60km network in 30 years is not exactly focusing on expansion.

Another interesting thing is how they always highlight elevation subway as modern and efficient, yet Toronto doesn't do that anymore.

Vaughan extension, Eglinton West Subway, and Sheppard West and East were all on the books...DRL would have been a reality...

The point I was trying to make was that prior to 1992 the TTC focused more on building extensions or new lines (Eglinton Subway, Harbourfront LRT, SRT, Etc) while forgetting to maintain what they had. It lead to David Gunn nearly condemning the North Yonge extension for safety reasons. It is one of the reasons we had Line 1 closed north of Eglinton for so long overnight.

Yes we expanded after the video was made but there was a shift away from capital expenditures to SOGR which is still the focus today. Yes we build but we also maintain what we have.
