TTC: Other Items (catch all)

Webster was one of those TTC dinosaurs who prevented change and innovation. Byford is such a breath of fresh air but the poor man can't fight the TTC mafia all by himself...

Webster picked one heck of a good replacement though.

Incidentally, they didn't technically fire Webster. They asked him to work from home with full pay, on projects of his own choosing, without interacting with other TTC staff, until his originally planned retirement date.

Where are you hearing this from? That would have been the smart thing to do, if he was feeling generous enough to do that. Instead he got about $600 000 in severance for being fired a couple months before his retirement.

I see where I got confused. His severance was paid in regular instalments roughly equal in size to his regular pay cheque. I'm used to severance being a lump-sum thing, though I suppose the risk of the TTC not paying is very low.

Effectively the same result (for a slightly longer period), but yes, they did fire him.

Its a good think Council stepped up and brought Byford in. Ford and his allies on the TTC board would never have done it.:)

TTC Explainer video on POP and transfers

Didn't realize the entire streetcar network is going POP by the end of 2015...

It seems strange that for Presto you have to tap at the door, then tap again at the machine to get a paper receipt.

I think that's a temporary situation, since not all the stations have Presto readers for you to transfer with. With the complete Presto rollout the receipts shouldn't be necessary anymore, since you should be able to just tap again at the transfer and the machine will see that you are transferring.

Yes, the alternate would be to temporarily install machine at all the doors that give out receipts.

Maybe TTC should look at this.

Wire ropes as platform screens

28 Apr 2015

SWEDEN: South Korean firm SKD-Hitec has demonstrated a platform screen door made from wire ropes at Stockholm’s Åkeshov metro station.
Rather than sliding doors, Rope Screen Door uses lightweight panels made of self-tensioned wire ropes which move down to screen the platform edge. The manufacturer says the system could be 50% cheaper than platform edge doors, can be installed in one-third of the time and needs less shielding from the weather. It can accommodate varying door positions, and the open nature of the screen allows air flow.
Prototypes have previously been installed in Japan and at Moonyang station on the Daegu metro. The system is also to be used at Osong station on the Gyeongbu high speed line in South Korea.

Yes, one is in Rosedale. Transit is crap up there ... so I can imagine they'd have a lot of frustrating stories to tell ...
The 82 Rosedale is probably the most reliable TTC route out there lol. There has never been an instance where that route hasn't been on time for me.

Maybe TTC should look at this.

Screen doors have been discussed at the TTC. In fact, the ATC (Automatic Train Control), with the Toronto Rocket subway trains, was the first step. The second step was for the Spadina extension to open with screen doors. However, the penny-pinchers are very reluctant to spend the money to put in screen doors. Guess it would interfere with controlling "the surplus population".
