Remember when the streetcars all ran on a fixed route and weren't changing every few weeks?
Weeks? 506 was changing about twice a week last summer. Perhaps 4 times a week, given the difference between what they said, and what they actually did.

On one run, a 506 got so lost around Wellesley/Parliament that they ended up near St. Clair!
 
Significant TTC service changes coming June 18 to accommodate east-end construction projects

Beginning Sun., June 18, several construction projects in the east end of the City will impact TTC bus and streetcar service. The TTC is working hard to ensure that customers have as many options as possible to get to and from their destinations.

“While this work is important, we appreciate that it is inconvenient for customers who rely on the TTC to get them safely to their destinations,” said TTC Chair Jon Burnside. “I want to thank the TTC teams who have been working hard to ensure that there are alternative routes available for customers, and who will be monitoring service on the routes and making adjustments as needed.”

“We know that construction and route diversions can be challenging for our customers,” said TTC CEO Rick Leary. “That’s why we are working to ensure that customers are aware of the diversions, and can utilize alternate routes to get to their destinations. Customers can expect to see clear signage at the impacted stations, dedicated TTC staff members on hand to answer questions, and information on our website and social media channels.”

The following stations/routes will be impacted:

Broadview Station

Beginning June 18 until approximately November 2023, work will be underway to upgrade the streetcar tracks and overhead power on Broadview Ave. from Danforth Ave. to Gerrard St. E. This is the next phase of a coordinated project between the City of Toronto, Toronto Water, and the TTC to renew and upgrade important infrastructure on Broadview Ave. Toronto Water has just completed their work. The City of Toronto will complete planned road resurfacing and sidewalk repairs after TTC track work is complete later this summer.

Broadview Station will remain open during this period, and subway service will be unaffected. There will be no bus or streetcar service on Broadview Ave. between Broadview Station and Gerrard St. E. during construction as vehicular access on Broadview Ave. will be restricted to northbound-only traffic and the remaining lane is too narrow for safe bus operation.

The following service changes will be required:

• There will be no 504/304 King or 505 Dundas service at Broadview Station, and between Sumach St. and Broadview Station. Customers can take the 72A Pape from Pape Station to King St. E. and Parliament St. to connect to a 504 King streetcar. The 304 King bus will be extended to Pape Station.

• 72A Pape will be extended to King St. E. and Parliament St. from Pape Station. Service along this route will be increased for frequent travel between King St. and Parliament St. and Pape Station.

• The 100 Flemingdon Park will divert from Broadview Station to Pape Station and continue south to the King and Parliament intersection.

• The 8 Broadview, 62 Mortimer and 87 Cosburn will continue to service the station.

• The 8 Broadview route will also be extended to Warden Station via O’Connor Dr. and St Clair Ave. E., replacing the 70C Coxwell route.

Coxwell Station

Construction at the Lower Gerrard and Coxwell intersection to replace aging streetcar tracks will require a full intersection closure. This follows the completion of Toronto Water infrastructure renewal under the intersection that began earlier this year. The following routes will be affected:

• 22 Coxwell bus service will be temporarily suspended. The 31 Greenwood, which currently operates to/from Coxwell Station, will be extended to Coxwell Ave. and Queen St. Service on the 31 Greenwood will be increased.

• The 322 Coxwell Blue Night bus will temporarily divert via Danforth Ave., Greenwood Ave., and Queen St. E.

• 506C Carlton replacement buses will detour via Greenwood Ave., Danforth Ave., and Coxwell Ave., serving Greenwood and Coxwell stations on street.

• The 8 Broadview will replace the 70C Coxwell service. Customers travelling to/from St. Clair Ave. E. should transfer to the 8 Broadview at O’Connor Dr. and St. Clair Ave. or board 8 Broadview buses from Broadview Station or Warden Station.

• There will be no service on Coxwell Ave. between Upper Gerrard St. E. and Queen St. E. as well as on Gerrard St. E. between Greenwood Ave. and Coxwell Ave.

Main Street Station

The bus/streetcar loop at Main Street Station remains closed for critical structural rehabilitation work until September 2023. The following service changes are in effect:

• 20 Cliffside is turning back at Victoria Park Station via Victoria Park Ave.

• 23 Dawes has been extended and terminates/turns back using on-street looping via Eastdale Ave.

• 62 Mortimer is extended from Main St. to Victoria Park Station. Customers can use Line 2 or 62 Mortimer between Main Street and Victoria Park stations.

• 506C Carlton replacement buses are operating between Castle Frank Station and Victoria Park Station.

Aside from the fact that work is progressing at a rate of about 1 day per week......

Two Danforth routes (Danforth 113 and Cliffside 20) are gone from Danforth btw Main and VP.

Mortimer 62 is now on Danforth from Main to VP.

Mortimer and Dawes are now boarding on Danforth..........and no shelter has been provided......nothing, nada, squat, for a 4-month window, in rainy season........at a location where.......wait for it.......there's a shelter pad in place, because its a former stop.

Perhaps if the TTC isn't already doing so, they too could employ these devices to lessen track vibration, particularly on line 2.

Except that they don't lessen vibration, at least not by any direct methods that would affect the B-D track - all it does is make the wheel slightly more slick vis-a-vis its contact with the rail. It reduces noise by allowing the wheels to slide on the railhead more easily.

And this is much more of a problem with vehicles such as Bombardier's ART (of which the SRT is one of) or BART, where a flat wheel tread profile is used.

The TTC's subway profile is very similar to the streetcar profile, and features a tapered tread to help provide self-steering/self-balancing on the track. A flat wheel profile doesn't do this.

Take the TTC to explore Toronto this weekend

Events and festivals happening across the city make this an ideal weekend to explore Toronto, and taking the TTC is the best way to experience all the action.

With no scheduled subway closures, and bus and streetcar route adjustments to accommodate events, the TTC is the fastest and most convenient way to get there.

Events and festivals

The annual Taste of Little Italy begins tomorrow, Fri. June 16 and the 506 Carlton will take customers to the three-day food festival, with stops at College and Bathurst streets, and College St and Ossington Ave. The 506/306 Carlton will divert along Dundas St. W. between Bathurst St and Ossington Ave. from Fri., June 16 at 12 p.m., until Mon., June 19 at 3 a.m. to accommodate the event.

The 102D Markham Rd. will be diverting to accommodate road closures for the Markham Village Music Festival from Fri., June 16, at 2 p.m., to Sun., June 18 at 12 a.m.

On Sat., June 17, from 4 – 11:30 a.m., the 80 Queensway will divert to accommodate the Toronto Waterfront 10K.

On Sun., June 18, the Yorkville Exotic Car Show will be held on Bloor St W., from Avenue Rd to Bay St. Customers can take Line 2 to Bay Station to get to the event, while the 300 Bloor-Danforth will divert from 5:30 – 8 a.m.

Also on Sun., June 18, from 6 a.m. – 3 p.m., the 13 Avenue Road and 94 Wellesley will divert for the Journey to Conquer Cancer. Customers on 506 Carlton may experience delays during the event.

Road closures and construction

The TTC will also adjust some routes to accommodate road closures for construction, and for streetcar track work this weekend.

On Fri., June 16, from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., the 75 Sherbourne will divert due to road closures on Lower Sherbourne St and The Esplanade.

Also from Fri., June 16, at 11 p.m., to 4 a.m. on Mon., June 19, buses will replace the 510/310 Spadina between Spadina Station and Queens Quay Loop, due to streetcar tunnel and track maintenance.

The 94 Wellesley will divert from 7 a.m. on Sat. June 17 to 3 p.m. on Sun., June 18, due to streetcar track work on Spadina Ave, affecting eastbound service on Harbord St.

And, the 121 Esplanade-River will divert on Sun., June 18, from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., between Cherry and Trinity streets, due to a road closure.

Random question but I’ve seen on cptdb a “Toronto island bus” route mentioned but I’ve never actually seen reference to this anywhere else?

I've also been intrigued by the route since the TTC makes no reference to the route in that it is never listed on the website or even mentioned. I believe the Island Shuttle was also were you could find the last Orion V after all the others were scrapped. It's gone now and judging by this picture the shuttle is operated by an Orion VII OG.
