TTC: Flexity Streetcars Testing & Delivery (Bombardier)

Any reason they haven't switched over to pantographs yet? Most of the lines have had their cabling redone so surely they should now be capable of supporting such a system...

Because despite the fact that they have converted much of the overhead by now, large parts of the system still aren't capable of handling pantographs.

Because 'most' is not 'all' and until all of a line (and its detours) have converted you must use poles (or have operators constantly switching and if they forget ....)
 
What happens if they use both the Pantos and pole at the same time by accident? 88mph and then its 2015 and we have flying hoverboards?

If the design includes blocking diodes then not much, but if they can regeneratively brake and feed power back into the system that would mean that there are no blocking diodes and they could therefore breach a section insulator. That has severe safety implications, so there would be interlocks on the vehicle to prevent it from happening. It will either be diodes or interlocks, depending on the presence and scope of regenerative braking.

Note: I'm an electronics designer and thinking out loud, I have no specific knowledge of the vehicles' capabilities or design.
 
Excellent to see a route is now fully ready for panto ops!

I'm curious how a pantograph handles a complex intersection such as Spadina and College -- is there an European YouTube with a panto close-up with intersecting catenary? Something very clear or high-def.

I wonder if it would act like a conduit. Power in from the panto and out via pole.

HOWEVER... I really could use a Pepsi Free right now along with a sports almanac.

That's not likely to happen, we have a strict procedure we must follow when changing from pole to Panto and vise versa. There is a switch in the streetcar that only allows one method of current collection to be active at a time.
 
I understand there were some issues with the overhead at Fleet Loop that TTC overhead crew were sitting there most of the day.

A number of cars had issues getting the pans up with the supervisor showing the drivers how to lower the pole and put it backup as well dealing with a pan that refused to raise. Watch 2 cars spend close to 5 minutes trying to get the pan up with the supervisor opening the compartment under the pan and doing something there as well in the cab. Came out of the car a few time to see if the pan was up and did some more checking in the cab. Should only take 10 seconds for the pan to raise.

While there is a cutover switch for current collection in the cab, there is a master switch and controller in module C under the pantograph. If the switches aren't set correctly the cab control won't do anything.

That makes sense. When one of the flexities derailed at QQ&Spadina with the misfortune of its trolley pole being right under a section insulator and unable to draw power, and they used the pan to reverse it, it took them a good 5 minutes between "okay, pan up!" and actually having it up--the supervisor went and messed around with one of the hatches in C for a while. With how paranoid the TTC has been against using Pans given the risk of incidents, it seems very likely that every single flexity had its pan locked out through that master switch, to be enabled only on a case by case basis, while needed, for testing or in emergencies. Stands to reason that they went out to flip those switches for the 509 deployment, and missed some of the cars.

Sounds like they will need more than the 60 optional streetcars they thought they'd need. Probably because of the Port Lands.

The earliest you need cars for Portland is 2030 as the land will not be ready until after 2025. The new Cherry St bridge can't be built until 2021/22 and only then if there is money for it since there is no land yet to build the south pier support for it.

TTC should had done 1:1 from day one and that 252 alone and you would need more just to deal with pend up demand then, let alone today.

Sure hope TTC looking for another yard for these cars.

Judging by the delays and more delays we've experienced getting the Bombardier streetcars for the TTC and the light rail vehicles for Metrolinx, maybe they are being cautious. The TTC had starting looking for new streetcars back in 2006, with an expected arrival year of 2012. They're four years late on the first 204 new streetcars. So maybe the 2030 date mentioned above is just about right.
