TTC: Flexity Streetcars Testing & Delivery (Bombardier)

In the original delivery schedule, were we not supposed to be seeing them on Bathurst soon (if not already)? If that is right, it would be very surprising if Bathurst was not ready to go already.
Exactly. Current delivery schedules calls for 30 units by year end. With spares, they need 15 to run Spadina. So they'll have that around August. If necessary they can then do Harbourfront which is already to go ... and those 2 routes need 23 cars, which is hopefully early November. So Bathurst may not start getting cars until November. Even if Bathurst goes before November, it should be ready to go in a few weeks, and wouldn't get any cars until August.

Dundas is supposed to come after those 3 routes, and if they meet the schedule, that might start in February 2016. Followed by Queen ... which requires 41 cars in service (about 50 with spares), so that's about an entire year's worth of production, so King wouldn't see any until 2017. Though that assumes they continue delivering 4 a month -... but by Fall 2016 they would have caught back up to their original schedule, so they could easily slow down production then ... as they'll have to be producing vehicles for the Waterloo line by then too.

How frequent were the Toronto Rocket subway trains arriving from Thunder Bay? That's 6-car trainsets

Streetcars are more complicated than one single subway car. A streetcar is also longer than a single subway car. If we compared two subway cars to be close in the manufacturing process to a single streetcar, we could get an estimate.

From the TTC website at this link:

The City of Toronto and Toronto Transit Commission will be replacing streetcar tracks, lengthening platforms, resurfacing the road and reconstructing sections of the sidewalk at the intersection of College Street and Spadina Avenue. This work is required to bring the track infrastructure and nearby road/sidewalk to a state of good repair...

...TTC Service Changes

March 29: 510 Spadina streetcars replaced with buses. 510 Spadina buses will run between Spadina Station (at Bloor Street) and Queens Quay/Spadina loop.

April 6: 510 Spadina buses and 506/306 Carlton streetcars will begin to divert during the intersection closure. Note: 510 Spadina customers can transfer to 509 Harbourfront streetcars on Queens Quay at Spadina Avenue to continue trip to Union Station.

April 27: At approximately 6:00 a.m. Spadina buses and Carlton streetcars will resume operating through intersection.

May 10: 510 Spadina streetcar service is restored - regular routing.

Guessing in the meantime, the new Flexity streetcars would be running on the 509 Harbourfront and 511 Bathurst between March 29th and May 10th.

Actually they'll be running only on the 509, and 509 service will generally be much higher. See this TTC Transit Planning document for details.

It doesn't say how the 506 will run ... Bathurst-Dundas-McCaul?

It'll be running Bay-Dundas-Ossington actually. Eesh. Bathurst/College unfortunately does not have ANY of the necessary turning track for that diversion nor does Dundas/McCaul. I do not envy the people living along that LONG stretch of College who are getting no service for a month. Additionally the 510 detour is Dundas-Beverley/St George-Harbord Northbound, and Harbord-Bathurst-Dundas Southbound...similarly that's a fairly long stretch of spadina (Harbord-Dundas) not to have service. The realities of the street layout mean that's the only real way to do it, but damn if it won't be unpleasant.

Steve Munro has a great article up summarizing the construction service changes.

Perhaps on a related note I was riding the 509 the other day, I witnessed both 4401 and 4402 making multiple runs between Exhibition and Union on the 509 route, and an out-of-service bus coming south on Spadina turning back north at the Queen's Quay and Spadina loop. Guess they're just double-checking everything/familiarizing the operators.

Thanks! It'll be neat to see streetcars on Bay, at least.

If things go right, 4406 should/could make its first official revenue run on March 29 on 509. Then it could be April 1.

"If" things stay on course, 4401 & 4002 will be going back to Thunder Bay by September for rebuilt and should be back by year end. They have put on more mileage than they should with all these delays and could be the first to retire when the next fleet is to arrive in early 2040's.

Why do they need to be rebuilt?

Why do they need to be rebuilt?
Same reason the other prototype (4400) was already rebuilt. They hadn't designed the wheelchair ramp yet back then. Reports are that they are pretty much switching out the entire module. Presumably there are other modifications required to convert them to the final design.

What, me worry?

What could possibly go wrong around tank cars?

BTW. Don't smoke, please.

Looks like someones been reading this thread, and decided to save million of $ by not putting the black numbers on the front. What will TTC do with all the saved money? :)
