TTC: Flexity Streetcars Testing & Delivery (Bombardier)

TTC boss suggests banning cars from downtown King St. at rush hours

It’s time to look at taking the cars off downtown King St. — and maybe Queen as well — at least in the morning rush, says the head of the TTC.

- Councillor Karen Stintz, who chairs the TTC board, will move a motion there Monday asking staff to assess the feasibility of trying a transit corridor on King as a pilot during the 2015 Pan Am Games. The time has come for radical solutions if those cars are going to move unimpeded through the downtown, Byford said. The TTC would have to work with the city to assess the impact on traffic and business. “We need to get serious about enabling surface transit to move freely at the busiest times, in addition to introducing larger vehicles,†he said.

- “If you really want to crack the age-old problem of streetcars running in mixed traffic, coming up against people trying to do left turns or other blockages, is it not time to revisit — just as a study — the political and public appetite for a 7 a.m. until 9 a.m. transit-only-in-one-direction road, and displace the traffic elsewhere,†said Byford. “We’ve got to at least reopen that debate,†he said, adding that some city councillors have already expressed interest.

Are there any of the towers that have underground parking that lets out directly onto either King or Queen?

This is too radical to be accepted. A better and more reasonable solution is to turn King and Queen into 1 way streets (downtown core). King will probably go West (Adelaide East) and Queen goes East (Richmond West).

This way, the streets can be properly shared. Of the 4 lanes, 1 will be pedestrian and curb bump platforms, 1 will be for a ROW streetcar lane, and 2 lanes for cars. Partner this up with slight reduction in the no. of stops, and better priority lights, and we have a nice cheap(er) solution to traffic congestion and faster public transit.

You are forcing riders to walks blocks out of their way as well adding travel time to their trip over "GOD LOVING CAR" Sorry, ban the cars since they carry a fraction of people on the road compare to a transit vehicle.

If Europe can run a painted line down the road where streetcars has the right of way, we should also be able to do it. Oh!! We did that and fail. Then the fine for driving in a transit lane is way higher than what we charge.

Stops location are not the same on King like Queen since both routes service different needs.

Put the streetcars/transit in the curb lane and this will force traffic to stay in the centre as well block other traffic making that left hand turn. This allows transit to see less interfering at intersection, except for that right hand turn. Sidewalks will be come a platform like they do today.

It time we become radical related to traffic, as where do you expect to put the extra 2 million vehicles that are coming by 2031, since our roads will not be able to handle them, let alone handle what we have today???

From all my experiences riding TTC to work downtown, morning rush is rarely a problem, it's the afternoon when King and Queen get choked with cars.

In the morning, cars get backed up and fill up the small number of access points into downtown: Gardiner ramps, Lake Shore, Avenue Road, Mt. Pleasant, etc. Once they pass those choke points and actually get downtown things move really well for the entire rush hour. It's because the cars are going into dozens of very dispersed parking garages and lots all over downtown that take them off the road fast. When 5:00pm comes, those same parking garages and lots all simultaneously vomit 50 cars a minute onto downtown streets and they get seriously backed up trying to squeeze through those same choke points to get out of the city.

From the PDF, comes the following information:

Proof-of-payment (POP) approach required due to enclosed Operator cab - added benefit of permitting all door loading

Phase 1: “Transition”
Existing fare media + PRESTO cards* + Cash

Phase 2: “Full PRESTO”
PRESTO cards* + Cash

* Note: The equivalent of existing TTC fare products (passes; tokens; tickets) will be available on the PRESTO card

Single-Ride Vending Machine (SRVM)

SRVM required to issue POP receipt (2 per car & up to 75 at busiest stops)

SRVM’s would:
  • Accept cash (coins only; no change)
  • Accept credit/debit
  • Accept tokens (Transition only)
  • Issue paper receipt (Transition only)
  • Issue limited use media (Full PRESTO)
  • Support PRESTO card (one PRESTO card reader at each door)

SRVM’s cannot accept tickets
For transition, need ticket validator (2 per car)

FARE COLLECTION - CUSTOMER ACTIONS

Perhaps a car free King St. would faster prompt the building of a DRL so the cars can come back.

Just the prospect of a car-free King Street will help cement support for the DRL. It makes clear to the city that surface transit is failing to provide good transit and something bigger must be done.
