Wolfpack looking for new ownership with rugby club in limbo

Aug 03, 2020

Majority owner David Argyle plans to step away from the Toronto Wolfpack with the transatlantic rugby league team, currently in limbo, entertaining new ownership offers.

Wolfpack president and CEO Bob Hunter says the Wolfpack are mulling over separate offers, one from North America and the other from the United Kingdom.

The news comes in the wake of news that Betfred Super League has terminated Toronto's participation agreement following its withdrawal from the competition last month.

The Wolfpack would now have to enter into a new participation agreement before being able to play in the competition in 2021. While that can be done, the Toronto franchise would likely have to provide assurances about its sustainability.

Citing the global pandemic, the Wolfpack announced July 20 that they could not afford to take part in the remainder of the Super League season. Argyle said his players were free to negotiate with other clubs for the remainder of the 2020 season.

Play resumed Sunday with the Super League down to 11 teams.

Here's hoping that the new owners keep the Wolfpack in Toronto.

With owner unable to pay bills, Toronto Wolfpack players, staff turn to GoFundMe for money

Nov 16, 2020

The financially troubled Toronto Wolfpack, a rugby league franchise without a home, have started a GoFundMe campaign to help players and staff who have not been paid since June 10.

The transatlantic team, which has 50 full-time employees in Canada and the United Kingdom, stood down July 20, saying it could not afford to play the remainder of the Super League season.

That hiatus turned into a seemingly permanent dead-end Nov. 2 when the remaining 11 Super League clubs and the sport's two governing bodies — the Rugby Football League and Super League — voted 8-4 with one abstention to reject the Wolfpack's bid for reinstatement in 2021 under potential new owner Carlo LiVolsi.

Martin Vickers, the Wolfpack's U.K. general manager, says the goal of the GoFundMe campaign is to raise 30,000 pounds ($51,775 US) which will be split evenly among all the staff and players.

That roughly works out to about $1,000 per person if the target is reached. Not exactly a safety net but a helping hand around Christmas.

A separate entity which will also be called the Toronto Wolfpack is planning to join a newly formed 14-team North American rugby league in 2022. Ottawa will be the other Canadian city joining next year.

Nice that they will keep the name even if separate owners.

So Ottawa Aces and Toronto Wolfpack will play a two-team cup for 2021 before joining NARL east conference in 2022? I guess that is the best out of a poor situation.

After an extended period of mystery, it has now been confirmed that the Wolfpack is back this season!
