I know it's been top-of-mind for everyone as to whether the Westlake Encore commercial building was going ahead yet. It is:

Am I missing something, the rendering a few posts up and this small piece of land they're currently building on - this isn't the same thing is it? Granted I don't walk around the Westlake area much as I find it's a bit of a mess with traffic but I can't place the retail area from the rendering?

It is the same thing.

People have been moving into Encore for a bit now. Full update…

from Lake Shore, looking up through the early phases:

Work is slowly progressing on the commercial building at Park Lawn:

The driveway that connects trough to Key West is complete:

Landscaping is now in:

Retail units now leasing below the tower. Could be 4 or so, depending upon how much space each takes:

Looking up the new (and currently dead end) bike path beside the Mimico Creek:

The next extension would take the trail past Key West, then there's the empty property before South Beach, then South Beach of course. Beyond that, it would be under the Lakeshore rail corridor bridge, then under the Park Lawn off ramp from the Gardiner, then under the Gardiner, and then finally on up to The Queensway. I'm hoping all that gets built while I'm still ambulatory: it'll make getting to the lake from the area to the north far more pleasant.

The north edge of Encore (with Key West on the left edge):

And looking back down the valley towards the lake:

The valley's nicely wild looking.

From Sept. 23, 2018:

encore commercial.jpg

The steel frame and roofing is complete, stud framing has begun. Props to Onni for being one of the very few developers in the area to honor their standalone commercial building obligations straight away.

All the standalone commercial on Park Lawn has been built, while for some reason, none of it on Lake Shore has.

I wonder how the city plans to deal with these empty parcels? It looks like a lot of the developers have no plans to build much of anything on them.

I noticed earlier last week that the retail space on the ground floor of Westlake Encore has been leased out already. Does anyone have any idea who the tenant will be?

Seems to be something of a missed opportunity based on the building permit description:

Mechanical(MS)
Status:
Issuance Pending
Location:
8 PARK LAWN RD
TORONTO ON
Ward 6: Etobicoke-Lakeshore
Application#:
18 233015 HVA 00 MS
Accepted Date:
Sep 28, 2018
Project:
Multiple Unit Building
Work:
Building Permit Related(MS)
Description:
HVAC - Proposal for interior alterations to construct a massage therapy unit.

This is why you have second floor retail..

There is more than one retailer expected there. There are three sets of double doors across the front there, so we could see a couple more depending on how large each unit is.

They started laying the brick on the very back side of the building

en 3.jpg

It may be just a trick of lighting, but the shade of the brick looks redder than the rest of the retail portion of Westlake. I was able to see this brick and the brick around Panago at the same time and the existing retail looks on the orange side of brown compared to this reddish brown. But again, it may just be because this is shaded by tarps.

All 3 retail units in the podium have had "Leased" signs on them for a while now. As per the above post one of the units will be a massage therapy place. Looks like the other 2 units also have filed their building applications:

Considering the amount of dogs in the area, anything like PetValu will make a killing at this location.

I wonder what small restaurant we are getting here. I personally would love to see some sort of Mediterranean or Indian cuisine come ihere.

That will be interesting to see - thanks for the update.

I'm looking forward to seeing who takes the big unit on Park Lawn. Definitely a full size restaurant.

Freshii, while a toronto based chain, has locations all across the planet. I went to Ireland in June and there was one in my hotel in Dublin..
