Toronto Union Subway Station: Second Platform and Concourse Improvements | ?m | ?s | TTC | IBI Group

With those great photos of the current status of the construction ... is there plans for a new exit at the SE corner of Front and Bay? It doesn't look like it would be difficult to do, given the size of the hole ... and would be very useful.

I've never quite figured this out from the plans that have been posted.

I maybe wrong, but a a new entrance was to be built for the expanded streetcar loop if and when it got built. It may happen now which is the correct thing to do, or rough in for the future expansion.

I hope that a progressive mayor wins in 2014 and the first thing he (or, by the looks of it, she) is fund the LRT. it is a large cost, but very much worth it.

The first level below the street is the concourse level with ticketing and access between PATH and Union Station. The lower level is actually the new subway platform. Photos taken 30 July 2013.

This caught my eye, from the BlogTO item:

"The pedestrian bottleneck in the moat area between the Union Station proper and the subway entrance is also being addressed with the addition of wider stairs and wheelchair and stroller ramps. A glass roof will weatherproof the transition area at a later date."

Meaning when the bay concourse reopens after renovations in 2015. The stairs have to be eliminated first. I would expect the glass canopy (or at least the one over the TTC) to be one of the last things constructed.

The glass canopies are still a long ways away, but definitely being thought about. Last year, they were requesting prices from contractors for them.

Looking at the Moat rendering in the globe article today - where are the stairs? What are they going to do with them?

bobbob:

That's the West (York Street) Moat - retail to the north I believe, plus the West PATH connection. No stairs - there isn't a dig down to the subway/retail level at this end - and the staircase is located at the East (Bay Street) Moat.

AoD

Bay moat will be at a lower level than the York moat. The York moat will be level with the York concourse, while the Bay moat will be level with the retail level. The area in between the two will be level with the York Moat, and there will be stairs up to that level in the Bay moat. That is why when you look at the Bay moat renderings there are stairs in it. (they are not stairs you will use to access the TTC unless you are coming from the York moat)

Wow, check out slide 9. Could they have selected less appropriate light standards? It's like they asked the MTO for spare cobraheads from some highway widening project in Sudbury or someplace, lopped them in half, and plunked them on the sidewalk. Classy.
