Again the Globe, and the Star, are doing everything possible to shut down any idea of having a Casino downtown:mad:

Like all media, our newspapers are owned by politically connected groups and the stakes are high. Gone are the days of media simply reporting the news or providing unbiased "investigative journalism". If the media are supporting something strongly you can assume that certain powerful groups are trying to sway public opinion and will use these very media reports as a basis for their decision. No one will ever know the "truth".

It's true that we have to avoid the kind of inward looking design we see in some cities with casinos and convention centres. They have the effect of killing the vitality of the street, reducing it to suburban-like sterility and placelessness. That's the exact opposite of what I expect from downtown Toronto, where there are so many pedestrians that we need to have the highest standards for urban design that makes for an engaging experience for pedestrians.

What days? The Globe was founded by George Brown!

As can be seen from research into casinos, there is no "truth" to be rooted out. There are some gains (revenue, overall flashiness of the complex if it is like the Sands in Singapore, etc.) - though we don't know the extent of them for the city, since OLG bizarrely won't give the exact details before the vote. And there are some negatives (problem gambling, urban design, etc.) The Globe has run both positive and negative pieces on the casinos.

I'm not seeing this AG. The Toronto Star has definitely run more negative stories but the Star is clearly in the liberal camp by newspaper standards. While they do write at a slightly higher level than the slop that some call the Toronto Sun, it is in essence the same kind of paper, ideological (though I should stress that the Sun is almost incapable of unbiased reporting whereas the Star actually tries from time to time).

The Globe and Mail on the other hand, has always maintained the image of being unbiased to the extreme. Their op-eds are obviously biased but that's how it goes. I think you are exaggerating as you are wont to do on occasion. Just relax, this project is destined for success or failure based mostly on its own merits, not the machinations of some mysterious media vehicle. And if the media do influence opinions than so will the money from Sands, MGM and Oxford Developments. They aren't exactly weak, innocent victims unable to respond eh?

Yep while the star is the most liberal of the papers, they still practice real journalism. (they were the ones that uncovered the ORNGE scandal after all)

Bascially the list goes like this (from Left to Right)

Toronto Star with Liberal articles (though not always) and liberal opinion pieces
\/\/\/\/\/
Globe and Mail with neutral articles and Liberal opinion pieces
\/\/\/\/\/
National post with neutral articles and Conservative opinion pieces
\/\/\/\/\/
Toronto Sun with Conservative articles (always) and Conservative opinion pieces.

the Globe and Mail is my main paper, though I check up on all 4 websites periodically.

I wonder when we will get some High res renders of the full towers, but a bit closer up than the one that is currently circulating..

Would concur with most of what Innsertnamehere has said except for the fact that the Globe is quite "fiscally conservative" as the expression goes and has supported Harper in elections for a long time - so I disagree with the notion of it having "liberal" opinion pieces. Also, National Post articles are quite often explicitly conservative, and almost never liberal.

This is basically true. The old Globe was more liberal but since 2011 they've tracked further and further right it seems. As for the Post I rarely read it but what I have read is usually neutral (non-opinion pieces of course) but the opinion pieces are definitely conservative.

The Globe has definitly moved to the right in recent years from where it was the last couple decades. Not sure about 20 or more years ago, kind of a different time I would think for some social issues. Maybe it movedto the left back then, but currently it is certainly more rightwing and non-sensical than it used to be in the more recent past. Margerate Wente being a particularly glarring example, and most of her points I find to be troubling or simply inaccurate (such as recycling has no positive effects, and we shouldn't bother doing it)...the Globe also apparently has no problem with her plagerism. In reply to that specifically I have switched to a more ethically responsible paper.

Anyway, didn't know where to put this article on density vs livability in major centres. It's from a great site down south, guessing some on here know about it, I just found it recently and I find it to be fair and balanced, but figured this is a high density project so might be applicable. Mods feel free to move if necc.

I might add it was the national post that's been doing all the digging on conservative robocalls in Saskatchewan. They are conservative in opinion pieces mainly.

Considering they supported the wild rose party in the Alberta elections, yes I would say they are conservatives

Anyways, left coaster at SSP is reporting that this development will be going ahead regardless of the casino, but it will effect "the build out time and the quality of the buildout". So take that as you will.

I would imagine that this means that without the casino, that super fancy podium may not look as pretty in reality as it does in the renders as they won't have the money.

Renderings always underplay how thick mullions or frames will be. Casino yes or no, the podium will never look quite so gravity and weather-defying.
