I am so speechless right now. I think I'm gonna have my lunch break around Front/Simcoe so I can admire what can be.
 
People tend to forget about that strech of proposed decking (parklend), for over the rail corridor....it could potentialy kickstart future decking east and west of this location.
id say, its a once in our lifetime opportunity...
 
I'm glad one of our commercial developers is finally proposing something world class and not a banker's box.

Now see, this is what Toronto could be. picture it with these and the other projects being proposed. And wow, presto. Toronto instantly changes its entire skyline. Amazingly! and Looks even better then some other famous Cities. ( ill keep which ones to my self. I don't want to start an argument). So far no negative comments regarding these Renders. I though for sure some one would refer to the hotel as being dated. To them I say... get over it.

The Globe & Mail article mentions that there could be the possibility of two casino complexes in Toronto. This is new news to me!

I'm already favouring The Sands as the winning casino bid even though they haven't released any official plans and renders. It just makes more sense to include a casino in such a big redevelopment project such as this instead of creating a destination casino on our Exhibition grounds.

Really? I thought the convention centre was on its own south of the tracks, connected to the office/residential by the park over the tracks (and of course under the tracks). One of the things I liked about the original massing study was that it looked like things were parcelled out rather than being one big mega complex, with the convention centre separated by the park and the casino separated by John Street (or the walkway there). I presume this is all still the case (i.e., the are not decking over the tracks with a building, just the park), but what I think would really help this fit into the city is if the streets and park are all animated by actual restaurants and shops that face them, on Front, Bremner, Simcoe, Blue Jays Way, and especially on the park side.

Not to be negative, I do think the whole thing looks cool, but the massive PATH and Eaton Centre really detract from street life in Toronto and I'm concerned this will fail to promote street life in that part of the City too.

That quote sounds identical to the reckless planning decisions of the 1950s. The era of ""progress"", which came at the expense of following generations.

I'm undecided about this project but I won't be making my mind up based on some fancy renderings. There is a LOT to consider with this proposal. Some neat ideas showing up in those renderings though.

Fair comment, though in this instance it's replacing two previous projects - MTCC and Royal Bank low-rise - that arguably more representative of 50s/60s planning qualities. Of course we will need to see the details to make a more definitive judgement on this proposal on its' own merit...

I was commenting more on the attitude that "absolute renewal" is a good idea and that a casino is a "small price to pay" for this renewal.

I think it says two casinos in the Toronto area. So, theoretically, that could mean 1 in Toronto and 1 in Markham or Mississauga..etc.

As AoD mentioned above, the MTCC and the Royal Bank data building are better representations of these 1950s planning decisions you spoke of. This is trying to animate a long stretch of dead street with many uses (retail, hotel, office, residential, theatre, casino) and is a far better placeholder of today's mixed use mentality.
