I'd be curious to find out how many truckloads of scrap metal they are removing from the site. Must be in the mid hundreds by the time it is done.
 
Recladding and addition on top - they wouldn't have go through the trouble demolishing it like this otherwise.

Are we the only city that does this? I don't seem to have come across projects like this elsewhere, and I can think of two others in Toronto already.

It's not a bad way of building in all seriousness. A lot of these buildings have a lot of embodied energy in their development so preserving the shell like we see here is a sustainable choice for intensification.
 
I'm still not happy that Lanterra/P+S couldn't have found a way to preserve the Brutalist/International Style facade of the Sutton Place for the redevelopment, but it is interesting watching this morph at the moment.
