Road Alteration at 154-158 Front Street East​

Recommendations​
Councillor Wong-Tam recommends that the Toronto and East York Community Council:

1. Direct the General Manager, Transportation Services, the Executive Director of Engineering and Construction Services, the General Manager of Toronto Water, the General Manager of Urban Forestry, and any other impacted City division to review the revised drawings showing the proposed road alteration for the site at 154-158 Front Street East.

2. Authorize the proposed road alteration on the north side of Front Street East between Frederick Street and Sherbourne Street, pending review and acceptance by City staff and the feasibility of implementing the road alteration design.

3. Authorize a temporary lane closure along the north side of Front Street East between Frederick Street and Sherbourne Street, for up to 45 days to construct the proposed road alteration.​

Sherbourne Street Sidewalk​

The Sherbourne Street sidewalk will be poured, in the area shown in the image above. This will happen as early as Monday, February 28 or as late as Wednesday, March 2, depending on weather conditions.

Canopy Installation​

The canopy along the Front Street frontage of the building will be installed on Monday, February 28. We do not expect there to be significant impacts on pedestrian or vehicular traffic.

Front Street Sidewalk​

Shoring removal along the existing Front Street sidewalk and grade edge of the building will continue through the week.

Interior Work​

Interior finishing work continues with a focus on the upper floors and the suites that were adjacent removed West Tower Hoist. There will be deliveries of material to the site throughout the week

From the outside on the ground floor, it might not look like much, but inside: the building is aesthetically beautiful and coming along.

Related to this is a Member Motion before today's City Council meeting to reimburse the St. Lawrence BIA for proactively funding the drawings to construct the above streetscape improvements

How many streetscape and public realm improvements does $400,000 buy these days? Can we replace the hideous Solid Waste Management Services garbage bins in St. James Park with something more acceptable now?

Yes, the garbage cans are ghastly but they are going nowhere and it is not, really, a matter of $$$. In the (good) old days when Parks looked after their own garbage, we had much more aesthetic ones - then all garbage and recycling collection was assigned to Solid Waste Management and they have a mechanised system and standards (and probably union contracts about weighs etc). Their trucks are too large to go into parks so the bins have to be on wheels and they have to be 'standard' so the truck can do all the lifting. It was very sad to see very 'pretty' and well designed garbage cans installed by Waterfront Toronto removed and the standard ones installed. Even Pam McConnell, who was a bulldog of a Councillor was unable to get this changed - god knows, she, and others, tried.
 
Any chance that garbage collection will be transferred back to Parks, Forestry & Rec so we can have acceptable trash bins again? And whose genius idea was it to get Solid Waste Management Services involved in our parks in the first place?
