Early last week the process began for closing in the top two mechanical floors with windows & cladding. I can see the progress on the east and north side well and it looks promising so far.

The East side of Tower I looks to be complete, including two attractive spires, and on the ground floor near the entrance they're installing some kind of ornamental glass thing that looks really expensive. Kind of like an inverted Tiffany lamp, only fifteen feet high.

Re: Glasswork

Well, yes, expensive is the best description of his craptastic work.

Re: Glasswork

Well David's work is still much cheaper than Dale Chihuly... whose work would never be called "craptastic" by anyone .. except someone veiled and blinded by self-loathing.

No, no, definitely not Chihuly's style. I got a better look at it today, it's shaped with wire meshing and filled with crushed glass. The flair is in the metal working, the glass is just incidental, so I strongly doubt Chihuly had anything to do with it.

I like the entrance canopy of the Soho. It's a nice, colourful bit of exuberance that is welcomed in these oh-so-minimalist times.

And a Dale Chihuly would be too expensive (whose stuff is wonderful, by the way - if you have not seen his stuff in person, the Sandra Ainsley Gallery in the Distillery District always has some on hand and I strongly recommend a viewing).

The trouble with Dale Chihuly's work is not so much that it is not beautiful (it can be), but just that it's a bit ubiquitous and corporate now. Every time you turn around it's a Chihuly (directly from, no doubt, the Xiang-Chonwang Chihuly Factory No. 71), indicating a version of taste not unlike Las Vegas but not so big or expensive.

You hit the nail on the head there, archivistower. His work has become literally Las Vegas: it seems like just about every casino has one of his works. It's pretty hard to maintain your artistic reputation when your biggest "collector" is Bally's and MGM Grand.

Although middle-high Vegas--Cirque de Soleil level, if not Penn & Teller level...
