The pdfs tell an interesting story, slightly different from the announcement. One of the pdf pages has a date on it: Oct 23, 2006. The annoucnement is from May 16, 2006. The more recent pdf pics are titled 'HOTELS' - plural. The ground floor plan shows two reception desks in the lobby - one for 'aloft', one for 'element'. It turns out that 'element' is yet another concept from Starwood - an extended stay brand that they seem to be grouping with the Westin name. As there was no announcement of a second hotel onsite, it seems the project changed by the time the floor plan sketches were created last fall. Possibly they haven't announced the second hotel as there are no element hotels open yet, and a seperate announcement is planned when they are ready to launch the new brand. The size of the development as pictured in the pdfs certainly looks larger than the required space for 250 rooms at aloft.

Finally, while the announcement also mentions that access will be from Niagara Street - the pdfs show clearly that there will only be pedestrian access from Niagara, while vehicular access wll be from Front.

It looks like a good infill building. It's great how the whole neighbourhood is filling up this way, not a point single tower around (north of the tracks anyway.)

New 'aloft' and ELEMENT Hotels

ELEMENT Toronto Downtown to Give Extended Stay Travelers a Place to Thrive While on the Road
Announcing the First ELEMENT Hotel Outside of the United States
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 17, 2007--Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE:HOT) today announces an agreement with Manga Hotels International to develop the first ELEMENT hotel outside of the United States in Toronto, Canada - ELEMENT Toronto Downtown. Opening in January 2009, the ELEMENT Toronto Downtown will offer a fresh perspective on the extended stay experience through smart design, modern style and natural touches.

Launched in the fall of 2006, ELEMENT Hotels is inspired by Westin Hotels & Resorts and will re-define the extended-stay segment - the fastest growing segment in the hotel industry - by giving guests a place to flourish while on the road. The ELEMENT Toronto Downtown will be conveniently situated on Front Street West, just minutes from Toronto's booming downtown financial district, as well as the relaxing shores of Lake Ontario. Guests will also enjoy close proximity to Toronto's lively city center, where they can visit art museums, sample cuisine from around the world, and ascend the world-famous CN Tower, which offers bird's-eye views of the city.

"The city's vibrant business community, combined with the excitement and culture of the downtown area, make Toronto the perfect match for the ELEMENT brand," said Nicholas Lakas, director, ELEMENT Hotels. "Every aspect of the ELEMENT Toronto Downtown is designed to help guests thrive and be at their best while they are traveling."

At ELEMENT Toronto, rejuvenation will begin the moment guests enter the open, sophisticated lobby. With natural light streaming through a multi-storied window wall and the tranquil sounds of water and soothing music, the hotel will evoke a sense of calm and serenity. The vitality and movement of the lobby will be matched by the energy of the hotel's outdoor fire pit and barbecue, where a regular nightly gathering will give guests an opportunity to interact, while sipping a glass of wine or beer.

The smart design and clever use of space in the hotel's 220 guest rooms will be aimed at encouraging guest productivity while facilitating relaxation. The hotel's open, modular flow will blend together each part of the guestroom to create a residential feel. Each private space - guestroom - will feature multi-purpose, modular furniture, an entertainment center with a swiveling flat-screen television and a large desk with open shelving and custom-designed closets. Guests will also appreciate Westin's renowned Heavenly Bed(R), a fully equipped kitchen and sleek, contemporary bathroom with oversized spa shower.

The ELEMENT Toronto Downtown will also feature 700 square feet of meeting space, an integrated technology center, a state-of-the-art fitness center and cafe seating where a complimentary breakfast will be served daily. The ELEMENT breakfast offering is designed to meet the busy lifestyle of today's business traveler, as well the relaxed approach of a leisure guest. It will include signature hot breakfast sandwiches, morning smoothies and a great cup of coffee. Intuitive staff will provide guests the personalized attention they need and the space they desire to live a complete and balanced life while at the hotel.

It is the notion of essential space, whether public or private, that will inspire the ELEMENT Toronto Downtown to create surroundings perfectly suited to the guest that inspire rejuvenation while on the road. The ELEMENT Toronto Downtown will provide guests with space to thrive while on the road.

i wonder where on front this is going.it would be funny if it was next to the element condo.

This must be part of that 'aloft' hotel development. I remember that the plans called for something like this, with half the site/structure being used for 'aloft' and the other part being for extended stays. I could be wrong though.

yeah ^both brands are part of the same company (starwood)along with w

In fact, I did a little exploring and its the same developer (Magna) so its either part of the 'aloft' development or its completely taking it over (as simply a different concept for the same site).

When we were last yacking about 'aloft', I did some research and found that the building's layout meant that 2 hotels are going to be sharing the development, and it seemed at the time that all that was missing was this announcement.

Yes, aloft and ELEMENT will be part of the same development on Front at Portland.

Front and Portland? Kind of a strange location. It's close walking distance to King West and the "Entertainment District," but the street there is a bit dead. Maybe this will mean more pressure on the Globe to redevelop that building of theres.

Actually, on that note... if Project Symphony is indeed Globemedia, wouldn't that mean that the Globe site will soon be vacated? If so, this could be a pretty big development.

renders? renders in a pdf: here

you'll see on the second page of the pdf that the lobby has two reception areas - one for aloft, one for element

gets lots of info about the project from the local residents association here.

Edit: 3 threads about the same project have now been merged into 1. Witness the awesome power of vBulletin!
