Toronto non-mall retail (Odds & Ends)

I went to the Marshalls at Adelaide and John, in the heart of the Entertainment District. Yet, one foot inside that store and you are immediately transported to suburbia. It's a shame.

Seriously what do you expect ....

Have you been to similar stores in NYC ? Its exactly the same.

That's how they sell things for cheap. The Urban Stores are just generally in more attractive building / spread over a couple floors.

The very short-lived Ktichen Stuff Plus at Yonge and Dundas now has a building permit up in the window specifying retail. Not sure who yet but my guess is Puma, as that is what I had heard a while ago. Nothing to confirm that though.

Yep, I was very disappointed with Marshall's too. I was there opening day and didn't buy a thing. It was so bland and uneventful. (the store & the merchandise) They have very little in that store for men, so I don't think I'll be going back. I actually prefer Winners. Too bad another Marshall's is going into Aura. Now that I know what they offer, I'd much rather have something else.

Also in the PATH: TD Centre Reitman's is now closed and in the process of moving to their new store next door. Not quite sure what the fate of the old store will be--whether it will be integrated into the new store or leased to someone else.

With these changes and the ones mentioned by gregv, the bank tower part of the PATH has just about reached capacity. Still some vacancies in the BAC, however.

As I understand it, the vacancies in BAC are the result of the impending construction of Bay Adelaide East. It's presumably why they had trouble leasing the entirety of that particular stretch of the concourse (possible termination in the short-term) and why the existing tenants in that stretch are closing.

There was a party at the new GoStyle store in the Distillery last night. Looks like they are almost finished building out that space.

Canada's Holt Renfrew to launch lower-priced chain

TORONTO (Reuters) - Holt Renfrew, a closely held Canadian luxury department store operator, said on Monday it will launch a lower-priced chain called hr2 in the spring, well ahead of U.S. luxury retailer Nordstrom Inc's debut north of the border.

"A new hr2 division will buy distinct merchandise for these new stores, and the product will not overlap that found in Holt Renfrew stores," the company said in a statement that noted the hr2 concept would offer designer goods at "great value".

Nordstrom is opening its first Canadian store in Calgary, Alberta, in the fall of 2014, and will start rolling out its lower-priced Rack outlets, with which hr2 will compete, around the same time. President Blake Nordstrom told Reuters in September that he sees the potential for more than dozen Rack locations in Canada.

The first hr2 store will open near Montreal in March 2013, and another is planned for Ontario in early 2013.

"Canadians can look forward to a strong national presence of our hr2 stores across the country before the end of 2015," Heather Arts, vice president of hr2, said in a statement.

Despite a sluggish economy, U.S. luxury chains such as Nordstrom have outperformed rivals that cater to middle- and lower-income shoppers as affluent shoppers have kept spending.

But high-end retailers have also been cautious, typically expanding outlet chains rather than opening new full-service stores.

Holt Renfrew is part of the Toronto-based Weston family's Selfridges Group Ltd. George Weston Ltd is the majority owner of Loblaw Cos Ltd, Canada's biggest grocery chain

Hoarding has now gone up in the old PharmaPlus spot in First Canadian Place for Express. Opening date stated as 2013.

Not sure if this has ever been posted but Nestle Tollhouse Cafe is opening in the Metro Hall PATH.

It's been "coming soon" for months. I'm pretty sure that sign's been up since at least March 2012 when I was covering the Fall/Winter shows at Fashion Week.

Nestle Tollhouse have cafes? I didn't know this. If only I could find their chocolate chips! They're supposedly in Canada, but I have not found one store that has them.
