Mississauga Mississauga Soccer Stadium | ?m | ?s | City of Mississauga

There's no sense building 25K as there are no potential tenants drawing that number in this country. A good number for CPL in this area would be 4-6K to start, expandable up to 10K. Ideally the stadium would be designed in a way so that the separate stands (whether two or four) are expandable and able to be added on-to, for things like eventually filling in corners.

I appreciate @Midtown Urbanist highlighting many of the issues inherent to York United and the CPL in that market so far. I'm hesitant to believe that York's struggles mean that any CPL team in the GTA would struggle to the same degree. If this stadium is built in this location in Mississauga and is home to CPL/NSL I have no doubt it would do better than York, but it would need branding, marketing, and accessibility above all. CPL teams that draw well do so because they're in urban areas and are easily accessible by public or active transportation. There needs to be a community identity, of course, but even as someone who follows the CPL quite a bit I rarely go out to York Lions because the commute to/from is longer than the match itself for someone living downtown.

Yeah agree with many of the comments re York United. I think its struggles are due in part to the fact that 'York' is not really a place anyone identifies with, and the stadium takes a long time to get to from downtown. It feels sort of like a stadium in no man's land, representing a very unclear region. I think teams in Mississauga or Scarborough (or other parts of Toronto proper) could totally work with the CPL. I mean, I went to a Toronto Wolfpack game at Lamport a few years ago, and there was a super fun crowd of around 8 or 9k there - and I'm pretty sure 90% of the people there didn't even understand the rules of rubgy. But it was an easily accessible location, cheap, and they had a really fun beer garden. Personally I think it's a lot of fun to have these cheaper, lower tier sports options in your city. But since the stakes are going to feel like less, you have to make it convenient to get to and fun.

Not certain if there is a forum thread for it, but the City has a survey currently ongoing for input on a new stadium operator for Lamport. It needs significant upgrading and work to be brought up to spec but the new women's NSL is looking to use it as the home for AFC Toronto, and CPL would be foolish not to consider the stadium as a location for a potential team if the cards fall the right way.

I still regret never going to a Wolfpack game. I concur on lower-tier sports options. The most fun I have had at a hockey game has been at a Marlies match.

My dream scenario would be for the City, a private developer, and an investor in a team to redevelop Lamport Arena and bring a CPL team and a womens soccer team (in either NWSL or the new Canadian league forming up) to the stadium. I think people across the continent would be surprised at the attendance those teams in that location would generate.

I hear they have this great name all picked out and ready to go for this stadium. An unique, memorable, and distinctly Mississauga name for this stadium. Hazel McCallion Sports Centre!

HMSC is one typo away from His Majesty's Canadian Ship.
